You looked in the right place, near the ECM.
Is your engine TBI? Only TBI models had the yellow VSS buffer box.

Hope this helps.

That's exactly right, the TPI computer can receive the signal directly from the VSS.

Re: 92 rs vss buffer box

Can you provide pictures?
I changed my VSS sensor, didn't solve my problem.
I'm now looking, according to numerous threads, toward this VSS Buffer module.
Would be of great help.

Someone can help me with what I'm looking for?
That damned VSS buffer box, where is it?
Is it deep under the dash?
My speedo hasn't worked for too long now...
Need some hints please.

Bwalo, I am not 100% on this but didn't the 86 carbed cars use a mechanical speedometer? Then you wouldn't have a buffer box (which is normally under the passenger dash, by the ECM).

Thank you for feedback. I believe 1986 was a year of transition on many aspects... There were carbed models, like mine, and TPI was also introduced in these cars that year, from what I've read... I also tought it was a mechanical speedo, but went to a mechanic and he told me it was electronic... no cable runnin' under the car (at first i tought the cable was broken at some point). The year after, went for the VSS change... didn't solve it... so i'm pretty sure mine is electronic... Althought, might not be the stock system (Car has 23 years, so... did someone mess in there in 1998?)

Anyhow, what I'm looking for is a general picture of location... I don't want to open the dash/cluster/instruments at this point. Thought it might be less painful/costly to do so (buffer) before attacking the speedo itself... I understand it may depend on model and year, but I'm pretty sure it's all +/- the same spot on 82-92 F-body equipped with the yellow/white buffer box.

Well, thanks again for your comment.
