VATS and Keys
VATS and Keys
I bought a '90 Camaro. I have never had a set of keys for it. it has always been able to start without a key. Now i am getting a security light. it will start, but it doesn't want to turn over well, like it is fighting againist something. I want to change the Key Switch, but not sure what i am going to need to do without a key. Any help?

Re: VATS and Keys
If it will start it is not a vats issue. Vats uses 15 different resistor pellets inside the key to allow the vehicle to start. Somehow you or someone before you figured out how to bypass it. It sounds like a battery issue, starter or possibly a timing issue if it turns over slow and hard. Do you use a key to start it or to you just turn it over by screwdriver?
Re: VATS and Keys
All the key switch is there, u just dont need a key. turn the piece in the column forward. I am just afraid that if i change the switch, i will have issues with the security. I have read up on all the VATS issues and don't want to have any. I have never done a key switch before, so i was going to take it to a shop, have them fix my bright lights, tighten the column and replace the switch.

If I had to guess, I'd say someone broke the key off in the ignition which would allow two things to happen, turn it and have the right vats pellet in the key. Any reputable auto locksmith should be able to extract the broken key and make you a new one...but I'm sure it won't be cheap. At least you'd be the only one who could start the car then

Re: VATS and Keys
The vats value is determined by a seperate computer. The ignition can be changed with a different key but you'll still need to know the vats value. This can be done with a tool called the interagator. It basically a trial and error process that could take time and only a locksmith will have these tools. GM may be able to tell you what the vats value is from their factort records or it may be written in you owners manual. I'd see a locksmith and bite the bullet

Since there are only 15 possible values for the resistor in the chip, you could save the expense of a locksmith and test it yourself for $15 and some time. The resistors are all available at Radio Shack for $1 each - just put them in one by one until you get the car to start - then you know. A new ignition switch can be had a CarQuest for $50, and new VATS keys made at Ace Hardware for $20 each (using the plastic blank that comes with the new ignition cylinder, and the newly found value for the VATS from your resistor test. See the tech article on bypassing VATS, then you'll know how to test it yourself.

Re: VATS and Keys
My VATS has gone out twice in the last 6 months...in both cases before it failed the car became harder to start before it totally failed.
I would go to your local Chevy/Pontiac dealer, give them the VIN...they will likely want to see the car or proof of ownership and ask them which of the 15 keys it came with. You can then have a proper key made (about $20) or Once you know the key number, you can then order a VATs bypass from Hecklers Camaro about $35 (part + S/H).
Another route you can go is to order a VATS Bypass from Hawks 3rd Gen. The bypass they have hooks to your cars computer and is based off frequency and not resistance, like the keys. In short, you dont need to know the key number or it's resistance value.
In either case, I would recommend an additional means to secure your car if you by pass your VATs. I use a club and a brake lock.

Good Luck!
