Hi Beam Problem

I can not turn my high beams on. The switch work because if I push it myself it turns on. The problem I am having is the rod in the steering colume is not attached to the signal lever and I can't figure out if there is a piece missing or where it connects too. Thanks for the help.

Re: Hi Beam Problem

Are you sure the rod is not moving at all, or is it just not moving enough to actuate the switch? Switch may need to be adjusted to make it work.

Agreed, push up on the rod at the switch and hold it while working the lever as if you're switching between high and low. If the rod moves, loosen the two bolts holding the switch and adjust it up.
If the rod does not move then you're going to need to take apart the column, remove the steering wheel, lock plate, signal switch, etc..

Before you tear apart the column though it may be wise to go out to the yard, if you have any self pullers, and take apart a column there. You should be able to see how its done and what parts you may need.
There is a small plastic guide thing that is pushed by a tab on the wiper switch. Other than that its not much else.

Re: Hi Beam Problem

I'll throw my two cents in... There's a good tech article on this site on how to install an "old fashion" foot switch to activate the high beams. I ended up doing that rather than taking apart the steering column. It's very easy to do. It was fun, too, to watch the guys a the state inspection stations trying to figure out how to operate the foot switch - until they stopped checking that sort of thing. Cheers.
