wiring single cooling fan
wiring single cooling fan
,,,, i have an 86 trans am , i dropped a built 355 tpi in there, with a aluminum 3 row rad, the ecm and wiring is from a 87 iroc, i deleted the a/c, even the heater, only gonna drive in summer when weather is good. now my question,, i dont have dual fans in the car i have the stock 86 single fan, since i dont have a/c , and i deleted half the harness to have only one relay to my fan,,,, now what should i use to trigger that single fan? i have, 1. the stock temp switch on pass head,2.a temp switch on my new rad 3. the ecm that takes the info from that temp switch on the intake below throttle body, can i use the gre/wh wire from the ecm and both switches on the same relay?? should i rely only on ecm? only on 1 switch? 2 switches? if i use the ecm at all,,,, since i have an 87 wiring, do i ground, or open the blue wire from the a/c? cause i dont have a/c ,,,the car i took the ecm and wire from used to have a/c. if i dont use the ecm,, can i just leave it like that or is there something i should change not to mess up anything,,,,,, i just dont wanna try a bunch of things, want to wire the car properly once,, and hide harness with loom once and for all, thanks.sorry for the looooong question

Re: wiring single cooling fan
If you deleted your A/C, you do not need to do anything and just leave the ECM in charge of the cooling fan. Since you have a built 355, I assume you are tuning a new chip. At that point, you can adjust your fan on/off temperatures.
Re: wiring single cooling fan
thanks,, but can i add the temp switch from the passenger head as well as a back up? shouldnt do anything wrong hey? its only ground,,, right now, i have that green/white wire comming from the ecm, spliced with a wire goin to the pass head temp switch and another going to rad temp switch, that way, as soon as anything gets too hot, it'll ground,,,, can i leave it like that?? if so, ill tuck all these wires in the loom and forget about them!!! thanks.

This is not the light blue wire from the compressor wiring (from your other post).
Re: wiring single cooling fan

I can only assume you can have the A/C fan request tuned out of the prom (similar to removing VATS). ECM code isn't quite my thing, though so, that's not a definitive answer. Grounding the blue wire isn't really difficult either, though.

Re: wiring single cooling fan
I read the hole post and would like to add this for any one interested in a simple yet very effective means of converting/installing a fan and making it a "adjustable" using the stock ground wire going to the switch in the head. Just forget about all the rest and
install one of these, and heres how.(You will only be using the adjustable fan controller in the package.) The install is under $20.00 and 10 minutes of your time.

One of the easiest ways I have seen to wire one of these in(diagram below) is to simply take off the wire that goes to the switch in the head and ground it to the car. Than just cut that same wire (let’s say in the middle) and install the thermostat controlled switch in-between those same cut wires. Run the probe to the radiator, set the dial to where you want it and you're done. Anyone that has a switch in the head can use this method and have an adjustable fan.(The proper thermostat will be determined by what temp you want your fans to run at.)
If you want to know how to set the fan temp switch quickly then just ask.
Side note = I have two of these fan controllers using two separate fans. My wiring is different and more complicated but has the same end result. I can have my car run at basically "ANY" temp. I want and can change that temp. whenever I want. You can also do that with the simple technique I posted above.

Re: wiring single cooling fan
I agree with the last post, the adjustable fan switch is the way to go. Easy to install and lets you change temp as you wish. I had mine wired to run constantly but car ran too cold.
