lost pellet dont know resistance for my passkey

305 1990 camaro rs manual trans all stock for now.

So here is the problem, I went to the movies tried to start the car and got power but no starter and no fuel.

Next day I look at my key and the freaking pellet fell out, I have no idea the resistance I have been going through the resistors I bought from radio shack and tying different ones together getting the desired resistance but with no avail

Quickly, is there a resister sort of dimmer I could try out I've seen a radio one that looked promising.

But is there a way to type in my Vin anywhere to find my resitance because unfortunately the car isn't in my name yet

Next and last thing what should happen when I find the correct resistance, as in the security light will turn off or blink or something useful, any sort of help would be appreciated

Read this for understanding how VATS works

You could , would have to set and check the resistance by the chart in link above with a DVM ,then connect it and if not the correct ,
change the resistance value while waiting 5 minutes for the system to reset.

NB;
every time you turn the key the timer resets to zero again

Re: lost pellet dont know resistance for my passkey

Luckily, my car doesn't have VATS so I may not have the most current or correct info. Have you tried your favorite search engine?

http://www.vatskey.com/vats/vatskeylock.htm

You didn't lose your key but this may be one option:

I'd trust responses from other members with real experiences:

If you have a multimeter, I would get a potentiometer from radio shack and set the resistance for the first value from the table, if that doesn't work then try the next value, etc until you hit the correct one.

Only I simplified it so it is understandable. I told him what he needed and where to get it, you gave him acronyms he may or may not know.

There was nothing wrong with my post.

That is why we have Google for those intelligent enough to punch 3 letters into the Google search box and hit enter.

( as opposed to coming back here and asking ,whot tis a DVM ???? as is usually the case)

No kidding, never thought I'd catch flack for helping a fellow out. Apparently you're just supposed to google it all and not ask any questions. :/

Anyway, I'm glad you got it running. If you measure the resistance of what you have your dial at, you can build you a resistor pack and wire it into the harness. If you ever park anywhere you are uncomfortable, you can just unplug it and take it with you.

You may very well say that.

Many of the questions asked on here are not 3rd Gen specific and are just general engine questions.
The classic " my car won't start ,what could be the problem ?" could easily be narrowed down through a Google search bringing up something like this

http://troubleshootmyvehicle.com/gm/...t-a-no-start-1

Problem being everyone now expects instant answers to their car problems.
There was a time where unless you were friends with that grumpy mechanic at the other end of town ,you actually had to work on your car ,
learn it's systems and how it operated and how to sort problems out on your own.

Now all you do is pull out your cell , type in HELP and get someone to walk you through the problem without actually learning anything.
Too bad if your car stops in the boondocks and your cell battery is flat

You can't learn without asking questions. You are right in the fact that he was spoon fed what to do, but not why to do it. I guess it depends on your audience on if they want to know what or why.

NB
My comments were not directed at this OP ; he correctly diagnosed what his starting problem was and went about fixing it before starting this thread
His question about a variable resistance to speed up finding the correct value is perfectly valid (and 3rd Gen related )
