Stock water temp gauge problem?

Had a needle sticking on the temp gauge so I took apart the bezel and freed the needle. Turned the ignition to key on but did not start the car and you could see the needle move a bit and settle into the bottom 100 degree part of the gauge so I knew it was getting power. As soon as the car is started the needle instantly pegs. I have a new sensor but haven't tried it yet. That will be my next step but was just wondering what everyone thinks could be causing this? Thanks!

Re: Stock water temp gauge problem?

Sounds like the wire is disconnected and laying against something metal. (shorted to ground)

Sending unit (not really a "sen-sore" [/mr.spock]) might be fine... try hooking the wire up right.

I guess I assumed something that simple would have been checked but, you never know.
