Cams Cams Cams

Hey guys I been looking around the boards and on the net about cams and exactly what they do. I know the basic ness of it all how it opens the values to let in gas and let out exhaust gas. Im just confused about the duration and lift, and the exact details. For instance, how to pick out a cam that would fit my needs. Is there anything, any site or books you guys know of that I can read up on this type of stuff? Like I said I know the basics with some extra stuff, but the nitty gritty detail...I'm clueless on.

If any one has any suggestions then let me know that too. I'm lookin to make a strip/street car, that I can take on little trips with out having to worry. I'm thinking right now of going with either l98 aluminun heads or AFR heads, and with the Edlebrock Victor RPM intake. So if ya guys got any info...shoot it ova

Thanks

Give us the combo you want and what power level you're looking at, and we can reccomend a cam. If you just want info about duration and lift and how cams work, check out www.compcams.com they should have everything you need to know.

as the post above says.. we are a little hesitant to give recommendations without more specific questions.. cams are like relationships expensive to get into and out of.. and you always get messy and end up cursing.. some marriages are ok though, but everyone has an opinion as to what works best.

Basically the more lift the more power. Simple as that, as for the duration is where the power is being made so the lower duration the powers gonna be at a lower rpm the higher duration its gonna be at a higher rpm. The thing is the more lift your cam has the higher duration, im guessing everybody wants a cam with lots of lift and low duration or fairly low duration (depending on where you want to make power). Everybodys different on where they wanna make their power so im not even gonna get into that (1500-6500 is the best :lala: ) but everybody aggrees that the more lift the better. Gotta have heads that can take the amount of lift your throwin on so be careful. Learn more about it be4 u buy a cam im extremely happy i did. Still dont have the cam hehe but i know enough about it now 2 order it...just need the money

Generally if you plan on replaceing the stock camshaft with
a cam that is somewhat larger then stock you can plan on replacing some of the valvetrain parts too.

the major cam companies have free tech support to help ensure
you get the right stuff for your combination.

Depending on what heads you have, some machine work might be necessary also for bigger springs and such.
