Engine Swap

I pulled the stock 305 out of my 87 camaro and went and bought a 327 to replace it. I don't want to keep much of the "extra" wiring/junk under the hood after the swap. Is there any of that that really Needs to be hooked back up?
Also, looking to put an MSD ignition in. Any thoughts or opinions on models?

Did the 305 have a carb? If so, it will run your 327 quite nicely (assuming a reasonable cam), but it will need some of that wiring.

It really depends upon what you do for induction as to what you can remove of the wiring. Whatever you do, don't go slashing and cutting things, as what you won't need if you go with an old-school carb and distributor can be removed as a complete harness - just in case you find out you need it later, or someone on the Board could use what you no longer need.

I did this swap. Be sure and lable the wires as you take them off the 305. If you are going with a carbed 327..all yo will need is about 5-6 wires to get her running. Tie the rest together and pu them by the passenger side fire wall. nerver know you might change your mind down the road.

if the three are on the drivers side youa re in pretty good shape for mounting your power steering. you can get away without the passenger side hole by using aftermarket brackets for the alt. I did.

Ibelieve it cost around $20. The hardest wires to find are in the loom coming from the drivers side...there is a Fat pink wire along with a smaller tan brown wire these go to your distibutor (Positive and tach). You need the alterator wire, the starter wires, I had to lenghthen them some. Dont forget the ground strap at the back of the motor from the firewall. If you are coming from fuel injected you will need a fuel pressure regulator, Like the malory you see in the picture.Chances are your fuel pump wont run beyond prime....some do .some dont. If it doesnt you will have to rewire it up.

With changing carbs, don't you need to get a new distributor?

Anyways, I'm looking for a new distributor, carb, and ignition. All that fun stuff
What would be the best stuff to go with? The car is just for every day street use and I'm a small budget. The car's already been in pieces 2 months longer than expected! really itchin to drive it again.

yes you will need a V-8 distibutor. Cheap... Go to thr J/Y And pull a V/8 Dist. Bg Block Small block They are both the same...expensive..MSD Good Stuff. I ran a 600 edelbrock on my 327..easy to tune and a bit cheapre than the Holly. Get a good set of wires..MSD and go fron there. The EDelbbrock performer rpm intake is very popular.
