87 camaro engine wiring

OK guys,
You are all very skilled people.I'm sure you've all heard this question but I have to clarify:
I have an 87 chevy camaro with a 350 swap. I'm going to pull the motor and trans out to clean and inspect. I just picked up the car dirt cheap. It had a 305 tbi and is now carbed. The guys left the wires every where. Never finished the job. I know I need the starter wires, alternator wires, but what is what? Dist. wires are what Pink and white? I would like to keep it to the basics and pull every thing else. I'm going to put in a vac advance dist. Any thing would help. Thanks Jacob

Welcome aboard.

Nothing like taking over somebody else's mess. Professionals hate it.

Your best bet would be to get a shop manual, go to the library and get copies of the wiring diagrams, or find somebody with a similar car so you can find those wires on their car and trace them down on yours.

'87 TBI doesn't sound right, though. '88 was the first year for TBI in 3rd gens (or did some California cars have it in '87?). What's the 8th character of your VIN?

Thankyou

OK
The 8th character of my vin is H. The car was dated 10/86. And what I would call the ECM (not sure) is located under the passanger side of the dash.
Thanks Jacob

Okay, that's the LG4, computerized carb version. It should have an in-tank electric fuel pump. If it is the original carb (which isn't a bad thing at all), then you just need to hook everything back up where it was. It's almost impossible to hook things up wrong.

So that is the quadra jet set up. Now I picked up some 305 parts from a friend. The dist. and some other odds and ends. If I were to use the 350 that came with the car, which is in good shape, used a mild to moderate cam, aftermarket intake..basic stuff, could I still use the q-jet set-up or should I switch to a 4b carb?? Will the 305 distributer with conections that match the wiring harness work on a 350? The firing order is the same. One more thing, I don't want smog, will that mess with the q-get?
Thanks Jacob

What you're describing is basically what I'm running. Computerized q-jet and distributor, performance intake, carb and cam, headers; no A.I.R., EFE, EGR, or cat; on a 350.

"Smog" is pretty much an undefined term. Some would say that is anything that the factory put on to reduce emissions, but that's silly. Others think it's the A.I.R. system only, and that's ignorant. There are sensors that are required to run the computerized systems, but that's all they are - sensors. The system is reliable and makes good power while getting decent fuel economy with good driveabililty - what more could you ask for?

Well now that I have a basic Idea what I'm going to do I'll jump right on it. I have to admit this is my first non-import build. So I hope i don't mess it up too bad. Thanks for your help. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again, jacob

Head choice

I just picked up a pair of heads in good shape. Cast #14102187 1.84/1.5 305 heads. The 350 heads I have are #3973487x. My friend keeps telling me that I should use the 305 heads, more compression, more power, so in your honest opinion should I stay with 3973487x or the 305 heads?
