Ok, 87 Camaro, 2.8 5-speed. I'm planning out a 350 swap, and talking over details with an old time thirdgenner. He swears up and down that the tranny in my car will bolt right up to a 350....he says ill just need a different clutch. Now keep in mind we were not talking about anything in front of the motor, a/c, ps, ect.
So my questions are.....

Is he right? Will my tranny bolt right up to a 350 with out changing bellhousing or anything?

Will it be able to with stand a mild 350's power?

And what tranny is my car?

No, the V6 T5 won't bolt to a 350 without a bellhousing swap. Even if it did, it would be a terrible idea.

 

true dat. I've read so many posts about a stock305 t-5 blowing up after a 350 swap, and putting in a weaker (from factory) tranny behind the 8 just to save some quick bucks is not a good idea (unless you wish to be proficient at t-5 swaps?)

if it's just to roll around the yard so you wouldn't have to push it, it might work until you put your right foot on the pedal.

 

You can put a v6 T5 up to a SBC by simply using the appropriate bellhousing, and in some cases the input shaft needs to be ground down slightly. I know it will bolt up, I did it. 1 month later I put in a TKO600 b/c I blew the T5, btw, that 1 month was only about 20miles on the T5, the rest was cursing and saving to get the TKO.

 

one of my bud's has a firebird wit the 2.8 tranny bolted up to his built 350, i ask him why? that sounds so stupid?? he replys..idk thats the way i bought it...had it for a year no 5th gear...it must work not sure how though.

 

bad idea... The V6 tranny is definitely the wrong bellhousing and the wrong input shaft diameter and spline count. You'd have to use a custom sized clutch disc which also isn't free...

Hit the wrecking yards hard and use a V8 model...

I had a question similar to this...only I have the 2.8 automatic...and this guy that i work with...his dad has an extra 350 that he might sell to me for $100

anyway , this other guy tells me that even though the 350 is a stick...if they remove the bellhousing and some other part that if i remove them , there are 6 or 7 bolts that will bolt right up and i'll be good to go....that way i wont have to do the whole conversion from a auto to stick....can you guys help me out thanks

 

Wow; this is becoming disturbing...

To put that 350 into your car, you need the following AT LEAST (you may need more than this)

A different transmission. You must have a 700R4 transmission from a V8 (read: 305 or 350) third gen. Your current 60 degree V6 transmission has NO bolt holes that align with the chevy small block engine.

A different flywheel. The 350 flywheel for a manual transmission will not bolt to a torque converter. This new flexplate that is required is fairly cheap at an auto parts store. You must get the correct flexplate for the year of your engine. Just any small block chevy piece will not work. Your V6 piece will not work.

 

4.3, 229, and 200 V6's are basically V8's with two cylinders removed. These types of V6's are called 90 degree V6's. All V8 transmissions will bolt up to these V6's and the transmissions that originally came on these motors will bolt up to a V8.

The 2.8 and 3.1 are 60 degree V6's from 3rd Gen F cars are different animals. They are 60 degree motors.

The confusion comes when people lump allV6's into one group. They hear or read that a V6 tranny will bolt up to a V8 then assume that they are all the same.

Still......all these V6 transmissions, whether 60 or 90 degree, have ratings that are not intended for V8 use. As already suggested....best to get a V8 transmission. I play with the 90 degree V6's quite a bit. I use V8 transmissions and steer clear of the V6 trannys.

 

I was under the assumption that you could use the later transmissions that came of the 3.8 V6 as it is the basically the same tranny used in later 3rd gen V8's.

3.4L 4th gen's use the same transmission all 3rd gen's with 60 degree V6's have. 14 spline input, same gear ratios, etc.

3.8L 4th gens use a WC-T5 that the late model 3rd gen V8 cars used. same 1 1/8" input shaft, 26 spline, but uses a smaller flywheel and a 9 3/8" clutch disc. The 3.8L 4th gens have a hydraulic TOB, and use a "pull off" style clutch like LS1 cars use.

 

could you have a v6 5-speed trans rebuilt to where it could handle the power of a built 350?

 

Easier to start with a v8 5-speed transmission, which still can't handle the power of a built 350.

 

i have a built 350 and its been connected to my t5 for years. no complaints

 

Well every engine is "built"... the car doesn't go very far with a pile of unassembled parts under the hood.

What's most important is how it's driven.

 

Haa well that kills my plans, I was gonna get the T5 out of a Camaro 2.8 but I think Ill just get the 4L60 out of the van I took the 350 out of. At least I know it will bolt straight up, nothing sketchy

 

Hey i have the 2.8 L LC1 in my 84 camaro, but mine is backed by a 5 speed manual trans. if i wanted to swap a 350 into it, would i need a new transmission?
