396 isn't a small block it's a big block. 377 isn't a stroker it's a destroked 400.

Best engine? Depends what you want it for and how much you're willing to spend. If you want an every day reliable street engine then a 350 works well. If you want to buzz around on an oval track or road course all day long at 8000 rpm then the 302. Easiest way to build the most HP is 400.

Best results before the 383 blew up
Best ET on a time slip: 11.857 altitude corrected to 11.163
Best MPH on a time slip: 117.87 altitude corrected to 126.10
Altitude corrected rear wheel HP based on power to weight ratio: 476.5
Best 60 foot: 1.662

Racing at 3500 feet elevation but most race days it's over 5000 feet density altitude!

Somewhere, sometime in the past few months, someone had bore/stroke #'s to produce a SB 396. Don't recall any details, was surprised to hear it.

Humm, perhaps it was a stroked LS.

Can't remember.

Bad enough there are 434 SBC's out there. Now there's something that sounds like my baby Rat. But weighs 100# less.

350 block + 400 crank = 377
350 block (bored .30 over) + 400 crank = 383

bigger displacement=more power + torque + $$
small displacement=high rpm with less hassle
stroker= little more power+lots more torque

Five7Kid,

400 Crank + 350 ( or any other 4.00 inch bore ) Block .095 over = 396cid SB
Can be done with some of the older thick walled castings

There is no answer to your question without knowing the application.

By the way, all the nasty small block 400 motors and it's derivatives are built using Bowtie blocks. The production 400 block just isn't sufficient in terms of durability.

what would be the best small block to build with fuel injection
Is the car a stick or auto?If it is a stick,I would build a 302(350 block with a 283 crank,3" stroke).Lots of hp potential and rpms, would make a real fun road car.If it's an auto,I'd go with a 406 in a heartbeat.Like the saying says, there's no replacement for displacement....even though I've found one for my GTA

I've always been partial to the 327 for same qualities as the 302. high revs, high hp, plenty of torque, just a good powerband!

ok guys i got a question.. 350 + 305 crank = what? i know the 350+283=302 but what about 305 crank. little more stroke and still rev the daylights out of it. what would that do. and would i need a 4 bolt block instead on the original 2 bolt and i plan on putting a T56 in this summer if not earlier. thanks all. and get back to me. i will be using a MR from TPIS. thanks again.
