need help for swap 350
need help for swap 350
I know not an other 2.8 swap but since i need u guys well i have no choice.
My budget is 1000$ canadian = 650$ US
I got the 305 witch i have for free its a 305 tbi and transmition and rear end is 3.42 so its okay.
MY list:
-full exhaust except for headers
-inteak
-mild cam
-carb 650cfm
-fuel regulator for 8psi (is that expensive)
-front springs and shocks (dont really need but better off with)
-Motor mounts
I know i have to move my break line but Where do the break line will be in the way ?
Will my guages work with carb setup ?
I know a 350 is better but rebuilding one or bying parts for it will be to much expensive
Any inputs will be help full thanks

Well its a 2.8 MPFI
its got a 700h4 tranny but wont bolt on the 350 cuz the bell housing is not same
thats why a need a fuel regulator but dont know if its better changing it take the pump out of the fuel tank ??
and where do i put my brake line cuz they have to move some where??

well about your swap, you'll need to change the springs and shocks because the weight of the car will not be balanced and your car wont stop burning tires and it can be dangerous on highway !!! also the best is to remove your fuel pump and go with a straigh fuel line to the tank if your planning on going with carb. also your berlinnita has a 26 spline drive shaft, the 89 engine your putting in it has a transmision with 28 spline, you need to change that. also you'll need v8 motor mounts, radiator, probably a new relay for the radiotor's fan. check the engine before planning on putting a bigger cam , the power is in that cam but if the engine has over 200000 kms you'll probably end up blowing a piston or connecting rod or something. also you will have to get a mecanical fuel pump to get fuel to the motor. if your berlinita has fuel injection you will need to custom rewire starter solenoid switch. something else, since you're going on a carb setup you'll need to fabricate the fuel line and put them on the passenger side so it can connect to the fuel pump. it's not a good thing to put a 650 cfm on a 305, think about something smaller because you will flood the engine. make sure you find an intake that will work on this 305 because it's a 89 and engine cylinder head are not the same, so i'm not sure you'll be able to put a 350 intake manifold n it. if it was me I would keep the 2.8 in the car , sell the b*itch and than buy a v8 car, but that's my way of seeing it, I've own myself a 2.8 and it sucks bad, that's will I bought my v8 and still it's not enough for me ...

Back up the trolley here guys...
I ran my V-6 springs in the 87 and that was a BBC. I don't think that his springs are going to be as big of a problem as your posts lead to believe.
The fuel pump doesn't need to be replaced, He needs to get an ajustable fuel pressure regulator (afpr). The fuel lines can stay on the left side in that case.
I can't comment on the driveshaft splines, I know squat about transmission specifics.
In my 86 when I went to a carb I purchased a stand alone controller for the fan. It includes it's own sensor and relay. Only took me 10 min to install.
The thing he's really going to need that he didn't list is a HEI or similar distributor if he's going to swap to a carb.
If you plan on keeping the TBI, then don't ask me. That would be someone elses area of expertise.

If i put a Fuel regulator will it be okay like it wont brake my fuel pump since it goes at a rate of 50 psi and a carb setup only needs 8psi
MatRS how do know i was putting a 89 305 ?

YOU can put a fuel regulator but it's a waist of money . drop the fuel remove the fuel pump .

Yeah, you definately will need an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. My car was carbureted before the swap so didn't have a high pressure pump that I had to worry about. I just put a low pressure mechanical pump on the 350. But you'll want to go with a regulator since the car is already plumbed with an electric pump. Second, don't let anybody tell you that you have to change your springs or any other part of the suspension. I am sure that the car will handle better if you do, but with the stock V6 stuff, it will still outhandle plenty of cars out there. Don't do it unless you are looking to spend more money. As far as other things go, there are lots of threads if you run a search on this topic. Good luck!
I forgot to say:
If your brake line is the same as mine was (84 V6 Camaro), then you won't have to do much to move it. I just had to unbolt the little brackets from the crossmember under the engine and move it back to some other holes that were already there. That gives you the room that you need to bolt the V8 motor mounts on. You might have to bend some of the loops out of the way over on the driver's side over by the power brake booster, but that is nothing more than grabbing onto them and shoving them over, since they bend pretty easily without kinking. I had to move them a little just to feel safe about how close they were to the headers (approx $80 U.S. from Summit).

What would I do?.... The regulator sounds cheaper now doesn't it. BTW, the regulator is the way this problem is handled in 95% of injected-to-carbed swaps.
Ok here ya go.. I have a n 87 camaro used to be a 2,8 liter v6 i now have a blown 355 connected to a 700r4 with the stock driv shaft. You do not need to change the drive shaft its a 27 spline should go right into a 700r4 trainny. second you do not have to re run brake lines there fione right where there at, leave fuel pump in the tank block off return line and buy a mechanical pump, the fuel will flow through the tank pump. just fine even off. As for the springs, stay with them your fine the car is not goin to be that much heavier i would suggest cutting about 1 1/2 off the stock rear springs though for luanch. The guages youll have to have someone rig up with fittings off a camaro that had a 305 in it so the senders wil match up. The swap isnt to hard, but i would suggest just chill....save and buy a 350 the parts are CHEAPER
Good luck

So if i leave the fuel pump in the tank and leave it off it will still let fuel go in ?
what if i take guages from an other commaro wich has 305 will they work ?
could some one tell me how cam and heads give u better performance ? like what is the best sizes for 350 for cmf, cam degres ?
thanks Blown 87 Camaro

Yes, the fuel pump will flow fine, keep the guages you have just get senders off a 350 engine, yes do a better cam dont go crasy if your not gonna do heads ect. I strongly recomend goin with an edelbrock package, its cheap and made to go together liek the edel;brock rpm cam and intake package. Hope this helped.

My V6 car had new springs all around when I got it. With the V8, the front bottomed at the slightest dip, tires scrubbed something fierce in tight turns, ride and handling were tolerable at best. Now with the old V8 springs in it, all is well.
If you don't move that front brake line that goes across the frame, you'll be bolting the engine mounts right on top of it. Not good for right/front brake pressure. I just carefully bent mine and remounted like MikeS said. But, it does have to move.
Both my donor and receipient cars were carbed, so I didn't deal with an in-tank pump. But, if I had it, I'd take that to putting on a mechanical pump and the fuel line rerouting it requires any day to dropping the tank. I'd believe those 20 min/30 min claims if the exhaust and rear suspension were out of the way when you started. Otherwise, dream on. Use a 3-port regulator and keep the return line, your pump will stay happy. Even if you go with a mechanical pump, the return line is a good idea.
I've never counted the splines on a TH700 driveshaft, but everything I've heard is that they are all the same. The 26/28 spline thing applies to the rear axle - no effect on tranny.
I can't say for certainty about all the guages, but at least the tach will have to be changed to a V8 unit.
Even if you already have the engine, I doubt $1000 Canadian/$650 US will cover you - especially since you need exhaust - unless you go with all used parts and get good deals on it all.

Hey guys,
I was under the impression that all thirdgen driveshafts (regardless if steel or aluminum) were the same length/splines. Please let me know if I am wrong, but it is the rear axles that GM changed the spline count on in '89.

MikeS the driveshafts are interchangeable because the driveshaft yoke is not replaced.

TH700 driveshafts are interchangable regardless of year. '82-'83 TH200 driveshafts are too long for TH700's.
any 82-83 200 drive shafts can be sent my way. great for turbo 350 swaps.
