Jumping into the 350 club! New purchase

I've been looking for a 350 to swap into my Z28 and replace my 305 for quite sometime. After looking for a few weeks I found one . Its a 3970010 casting 4 bolt main 350 with 442 casting heads. The motor came with Crane Cams roller rockers, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, new RV cam, and a gear drive for $300.

We plan to bore .30, get some nice Aluminum heads, a nice thumping cam, hooker headers, for a carb I was looking at this Holley Street Avenger 670cfm http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HL...0/?image=large I will post more pictures as I slowly but surely acquire parts

Feel free to comment and give me suggestions! They're greatly appreciated!

That is the most useless application of a stud girdle I have ever seen(no offense to you, that valve train setup is probably worth what you paid for the entire engine)

Have you heard it run?

Haven't cranked it up yet, we're going to go through the whole thing. It seems to be very clean inside though.

Pull the pan and look for a bad bearing. That engine is way too clean to have many issues

No need to rebuild or punch out a perfectly good engine

"If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

As stated, the valve train is worth more than what you paid. Red flag.

0.030" overbore - there's about a 99% chance it's already been bored. If you need to do another clean-up overbore, there's about a 50% chance you've got a nice bit of scrap iron on your hands.

442 casting heads - I have no idea what that means.

Gear drive - useless.

RV cam - you've got to be kidding me.

Street Avenger - yuck.

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but this just doesn't feel right.

Re: Jumping into the 350 club! New purchase

Well guys, my dad inspected it and I trust him more so than anyone else. I took a look at the main bearings, they all look fine with normal wear, the crank is good and everything. The motor is a project for him and I, he wants to bore it .30 over and get new pistons for a clean fresh start. I've never really have been involved in something like this so it will be a great experience. I know the RV cam is garbage, i have one in my 305, as far as the carb goes, its just something I was looking at, hence why I asked for suggestions, if anyone could recommend a better carb for around the same price it would be great. I am doing this with my money and its pretty tight so I am looking for something that isn't too expensive. Anyways...thanks for looking.

Re: Jumping into the 350 club! New purchase

Sell the stud girdles and the carb spacer, neither of those are doing you any good. Use the money to purchase other important engine stuff.

Check bore taper, out of round, and diameter before you go overboring *****-nilly. Going .030 just cuz is really senseless and a waste of time and money.

Find a used 650 holley dp(or vac. sec) and rebuild it(buying a new carb is also kind of silly when you can get them used so cheap).

Have the block zero decked and run a .040-.045 headgasket, double roller timing chain(I have never been impressed by a noisy-as s gear drive.

If your looking into tearing into the bottom end you should have your rods resized and install some arp rod bolts.

If you need to overbore you should look into the 383 kits since you'll be buying pistons anyway the whole kit can be had for around 1000, stay away from eagle cast cranks they are not good news.

Spend most of your money on the heads, thats where your power comes from.

If you bore it .30" over, you will have scrap iron on your hands.

As I already said, most likely it already is .030" over. The chances of a 30 year old block still being stock bore are next to nil, especially given what else has been done to the engine. Pistons rarely "wear out", although they can be damaged.

RV cam and RPM intake are a complete mismatch. Get a real cam or change the intake to something that matches the cam. Spacers are good for taking up hood clearance.

Exactly what heads are on it? Going with new aluminum heads is fine, just make sure you match the "package" (heads, cam, compression, intake).
