427 camero

I am going to buy a 3rd gen soon as I get out off the service and I want to put a 427 under the hood with a six speed if possible. I would prefeer to use an aluminum block and heads. Does anyone know what I can rob a motor from. The car will be built as a street with a few passes down the strip. Emmisions is not a problem as I will be in PA. I would like to make power from 1500 to around 8000. With somewhere between 450-500 horse and same torque. I have acess to a custom frame builder and I was thinking of building a tubular front end with coil overs. And a cage that ties the front to the rear. I would also like to have a full glass front clip.

The only vehicles I know of that used the aluminum 427 was the 69 ZL-1 camaro and I think some of the 60's corvettes. You would be hard pressed to find one since very few of these cars had them. Then you have to find someone willing to part with it. I think you can purchase an aluminum 427 block from gmpp but they are not cheap.

You'll never get it by Ca emissions.

Before we get to far into this, if the first part of this post didn't deter you from your desires, are you asking about a big block or small bock 427?

Why stop at 427? Pick up a WorldCastings Merlin Lite aluminum block and you can build a 540.

do they make aluminum 540's? no, I dont think so. thats why he's going with the 427, becuase there are new manufacture 427 engines out there now that for the most part would drop right in. more power to you if you go through with the swap.

Accually There are a few companies that back aluminum blocks that can go 540+ (donovan). But the car is going to be built for the street. So 550 horse and 550 ft.lbs is what I'm shooting for. I don't want a small black because it is harder to get it streetable with out power adders. I plan on scapping the complete front end and makeing a new one out of tubular steel with costom coil overs. Should also give me more header clearance. Not to mention the weight savings. With the tube front I'm thinking of just using an iron block.

I only mention a 540 engine as the biggest easy BBC swap. That's the biggest you can go with a short deck block. Using a tall deck block to go even bigger isn't considered an easy swap into a third gen.

Yes the Merlin Lite aluminum block will go to 540 as a short deck block.

Well you could do what I seen someone do, drop a 620 Donovan straight from a monster truck into a Vega Supercharged and all.

Scary ****

I read through the post a few times an I didn't see if that was an aluminum bigblock or smallblock? I want to find an aluminum small block 427, brand new. Is GM Performance selling a big or small block?

Try Bill Mitchells(sp) site. He makes an SBC 427 short and long block kits using World Products new blocks. You might find some handy information there.
