305 to a 350 or 383 stroker

Im thinking of dropping in a 350 or 383 stroker engine in my 89 camaro RS. I currently have a stock 305 engine in it and want to drop in a bigger engine. What is the best way to go start out with.... a 350 and work my way to a 383 stroker or would it be better to just drop in a 383.

all depends on how much money u r willing to invest. r u getting a crate motor or building one? if so get ur self a 350 and build it on the side then drop it in ur car. and build that 700r4 run the 305 untill ur finished

The cost difference between a 350 and a 383 is pretty minimal. Why not get the extra cubes?

I'm not trying to be rude or step on anyone's toes but there is a pretty vast difference between 350 and 383 costs. Unless you meant buying a complete rotating assembly for each. With a 350 you can reuse the crank and rods. Not to mention machine work cost for clearancing the block unless he plans on doing that himself.

When I bought my last shortblock, the difference in cost between the 383 and 350 was minimal. If you are talking about having your block machined, then yes, a 383 does cost more. As for the parts, I've not found a tremendous difference in price.

Are we talking about a pre built short block? Because I was just going by Summit's pricing and a Hypereutectic rebuild kit for a 350, a good one is around 450 dollars, where as a decent 383 assembly is close to 1000 if not more, and yes there are a couple of 700 dollar 383 assemblies but i'm comparing apples to apples. Medium grade kit for medium grade kit. However if you are buying an already built short block then I would say go for the 383.

I was looking at forged internals for mine. The costs seemed similar. Yeah the 383 costs more, but not much more in the grand scheme of things.

True. If he can stand to live with Hypereutectic, I'm really impressed with blueprint designs short block. The price for the 383 really isn't bad considering its already put together and balanced. I don't know if they build them with forged internals or not.

The best rule of thumb I can give you is, never build a 383 for our cars.

A TBI won't feed it and a TPI will choke it.

There are ways around it, but they are very expensive.

A Holley Stealth Ram or Accel Super Ram aren't really THAT expensive. They are about the same as the cost of porting work + siamesed runners for stock TPI. The Mini-Ram is a great option, possibly the best option but unfortunately the Mini-Ram is REALLY expensive. The other two options are about half that price and sometimes even cheaper than that.

YEs Im thinking of buying an already rebuilt engine. either a 350 or 383 whichever is best and then in the long run modify it.

yes im thinking of buying a rebuilt engine keeping it stock still for now and as for the price im looking to find any places where they sell rebuilt engines to know the prices bt most likely thinking up to 1,000 for an engine.

Most likely i want a rebuilt engine and keep it stock for now since my 305 is almost giving up bt it still runs good.

Re: 305 to a 350 or 383 stroker

Here you go.

http://www.cmengines.com/Engines/Per...3/Default.aspx

383 stroker with 9.5:1 compression, 375 Horsepower. It's a 2 bolt block with OEM iron heads, but if you're on a budget, it'll work for you. Plus, your 700R4 should hold up just fine. For $3,596, you can't beat it.

They're complete engines, but you'll need your own carb, ignition, headers. I believe the alternator and pulleys from your 305 may bolt right on. Don't know.

It just takes a lot of $$$.

"Long Beach, CA", meaning strict emissions inspection and testing.

Your best bet is keep it to a 350 for now. You're going to have plenty of challenges feeding it and keeping it clean as it is. Exhaust would be my first concern, ECM tuning next. You'll basically have to treat is as a B-body LO5 swap. Dyno Don is familiar with all that, I'd suggest listening to him.

Oh, thats right. I didn't think of emissions. It really isn't enforced around here, sorry about that. And if you are going to keep the TBI setup it can only handle about 315 hp stock. So if you plan to go beyond that you need to port and polish your setup and go with bigger injectors.
