trying to stay tpi with 383

I am getting rid of my 355 and putting in a 383 the motor is put together with 10.6 to 1 compression edelbrock roller cam with 548 538 lift and 294 300 duration and a set of world products sportsman heads with the 200 cc runners and 2.02 valves and my tuned port has the factory 22 lbs injectors but has a bbk 52mm throttle body. the question is if the tpi will give the motor enough or is there wasted potential with the motor. and the computer will b tuned by fastchips.com if the tpi can handle the 383

Re: trying to stay tpi with 383

so my best bet for street / a little racing would b to run ported plenum aftermarket runners and atleast a ported factory base if not a edelbrock or tpis ported base with a good tune on the computer

Re: trying to stay tpi with 383

Yes... what are your goals with the car? I personally like the look of TPI and think it belongs in a thirdgen. Port work, big runners, etc help, BUT if your goal is HIGH hp numbers you woud be better off with osmething else.

Well, it will choke it some, but will still be plenty fine for what you are looking.

If money is tight, I'd port the plenum(open up the side ports to match the siamesed SLP runners), and stock base and get some SLP runners. Also open up the inlets on the plenum to match the 52mm TB you have...

That is a lot of cam for TPI. What's the LSA? (I'd look it up, but you need to go through the exercise more than I do.)

The cam is listed good to 6500; in the link I posted you can see the 383 w/TPI is flat after 4500
Will rev to 6K but doesn't make any more power after 4500; typical characteristics of all the long runner intakes tested

Re: trying to stay tpi with 383

Actually the problem with the long tube runner intakes is the cross sectional area. It is just not there for higher rpm horsepower. The after market ones have a larger CSA and help as can be seen in the above mentioned article.

Now if one was to take the First TPI intake system and open it up to its potential you would have the best of both worlds. The First base can easily be opened up to a Felpro 1206 gasket and the CSA carried on through the base. Open the runners up to a ID of 1.875" or maybe 1.9" diameter then we are talking some cfm.

Depending on motor size and cam we are talking peak power in the 6000 to 6500 rpm range. Along the way we get a boost with the 4th harmonic, 3rd harmonic and last the 2nd harmonic wave. By the way here is a link showing the different harmonic waves and strengths depending on the total runner length.

http://www.bgsoflex.com/intakeln.html

Just type in the runner length such as 21 inches.

Re: trying to stay tpi with 383

yea no i think im gonna scratch the 383 idea and carburate it and put it in my 92 rs and put a bone stock 350 so i can get a reliable car that i can get as many mpg i can and put back in the 22lbs injectors. i think the 383 needs the 1050 dominator not the tpi but thanks for all the info just a little more than i wanted to do to put it in.

Re: trying to stay tpi with 383

when you put the 383 in the 92
i would use one of the rams mini super
they'll be a investment you wont regret
bit expensive but you can find them on ebay
or used ones on different forum classifieds

Re: trying to stay tpi with 383

I agree, a dominator is way to big ..a 800 maybe, 850 is to big for a 383...hell a 454 has a 650 on it from factory on a boat and remember a boat has no tranny....so it needs all it can get thru out the band !!!!!

A 750 is more than enough for that cam.

At 100% VE , a 383 pumps 720cfm @ 6500
A 1050 Dominator would let it breath to 9500
