1985 camaro HO

i am in the process of aquiring a 1985 camaro IROC HO. this is the first project of this type so i am a little unfamiliar with it. It comes with no motor (previous owner does not have it and didnt have a clue what was in it). It still has the factory 5 speed in it. I am looking for a replacement motor. what are my options for an easy replacement. i have no idea if a standard 305 carb or tbi was installed i it. if it was just carbed will a tbi bolt right in? any ideas or direction would be most helpful. thanks

Re: 1985 camaro HO

An IROC could only have come with a 305 of some sort. 1985 was the first year that the TPI LB9 was available, but if the car was badged as an H.O., then it would have had the carbureted L69. Any SBC block will bolt in with minimal effort, but putting a fuel-injection setup on top will require some more work.

ok. yes it is badged with the "HO" so just a standard carbed SBC should bolt up to the trans and bolt right in? (mounts and such)?

Any SBC will bolt up. Getting what's on top of it to work just takes a little more effort if you don't use a carb.

Re: 1985 camaro HO

Looks like you have an 83 or 84 Z28 on your hands, not an 85 IROC, just fyi. You will need a bellhousing and clutch for this thing, too, it would appear. The 83 had a mechanical clutch, while the 84 switched to hydraulic actuation. Dropping a motor in it will be easy, but the small things can make or break something like this. How are emission regulations in your area? Will the car be legal, and can you get a tag if you just toss a motor into the car? Thanks, Rudy.
