Swap Time

Ive be-boped around and now im getting closer time for the swap.
If nobodys familiar with my car, Its a 84 sports coupe, 2.8.
350 4 bolt main, bored .30 over,
4 valve relief flat top, speed pro pistons
Vortec Heads
HEI dizzy
(https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/memb...ject-84-a.html)

I wasnt too decided on what i was going to do, but in light of recent events, such as blowing my 3800 twice, im going forward with this for my short time DD. so i can get back to work. lol

First off, Ive got to get the mounts swapped.
Are the v6 mounts heavy enough duty to suport the sbc? or should i get the new mounts for a v8?

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...2327&ppt=C0019

( i entered 87 350 camaro for my parts)

Second, where in the heck does it bolt up to?

I dont see anywhere for it to mount....

so, im assuming i need the v8 mount. But, will my HEI clear the firewall?
Lastly: does anybody recomend fabing a "vortec intake" by drilling a standard intake out, or just buy a vortec intake?

Re: Swap Time

I don't think v6 mounts even work on the v8, totally different sizes.

Re: Swap Time

You can't get most non-Vortec intake manifolds to cover all of the Vortec intake ports. They're much taller. Summit has a Vortec intake for $130, so sell the one you were hoping to modify, and get that instead.
You can use the V6 mounts if you get some V8 S-10 swap brackets.

Re: Swap Time

the v8 mounts are so cheap that its almost silly not to grab new ones. i think i paid about $20 for both of mine (rubber ones; poly inserts added another $45 to the tab) at my local part store, no need to grab any adapters. Also, the v8 mounts use the front 3 most holes, but you should be able to get a better idea with one in hand.

Re: Swap Time

Yeah, after looking at the picture of them, I realized how it mounted. Ill pick up the new ones, they're like 7.99 a piece, so ill go ahead and get those. Then its the big decision of vortec, or 882's... a standard SBC intake for 50... or vortec intake for 150? And pray I can get ahold of a valve spring, a set of locks and a retainer. Then get the assembly stuff.

Ive got to conjure up something to get the rust out of my lifter holes. A little bit of surface rust has built up.

If I go vortec route,
Can I use a standard set of pushrods? And will a standard exhaust manifold bolt up to em?

Re: Swap Time

If you do decide to go vortec heads, make sure to get a new pair if you can. I was reading in hot rod mag that a good bit of the performance of the vortecs was related to the slick 3 angle valve job the general puts on these things from the factory and that most machine shops have a hard time duplicating that.
Just my 2 cents.

Good info. I wont be doing too much machining to them, just the vatting, and cleaning of crud. they've only got like 100k miles on them i believe.

Re: Swap Time

after entering in my IVO/IVC EVO/EVC in desktop dyno and watching the hp drop, I started playing with advacing/retarding the cam...
(small engine build)
cam powerband at 2000-5,200
peaking at 338hp @5000 409ft-lb @ 3500 timing 0.0
Drop it back 2*
Peaking at 351 @5000 413@ 3500 Timing at -2.0
Drop it back 4*
Peaking at 362 @5000 418@ 3500. Timing at -4.0

Is it worth turning it back, or best to leave it at 0?

With vortec's i cant put more than .470-.480 lift in,
and summit and jegs cams are basically the same.

Intake Exhaust
Advertised Duration 282° 282°
Duration @ .050" 224° 224°
Valve Lift w/ 1.5 Rocker Arms 0.465 0.465
Valve Lift @ Cam 0.310 0.310
Max Lift Angle 109° 119°
Lobe Separation 114°
Cam Timing @ .050" - Opens 3° ATDC 51° BBDC
Cam Timing @ .050" - Closes 41° ABDC -7° BTDC

So .465/.465 282/282 is the biggest cam they make i can go to.
Not sure what the 882's will let me do, but i feel sure the ports on those will limit my hp wayy more than this little cam in the vortecs.
