mechanical fuel pump?

I'm gonna put an old 327 in my 89 RS. If I decide to go with a mechanical fuel pump, do I have to remove the electric one from the tank, or will the fuel just get sucked through it if I leave it in there? I don't want to deal with buying an adjustable regulator with a return.

Re: mechanical fuel pump?

so what can I use as a pickup if I pull the pump out? This may be a dumb idea, but can I tap a fitting into the bottom side of the tank and fashion some sort of filter on the inside? The damn regulator with a return costs quite a bit. Does the car already have plumbing for a return, or would I have to run an additional line back under the car to the tank?

If the car had injection stock then it already has a return line.
Some prefer the cost and ease of installing the bypass reg on their carb swap vs the hassle of dropping the tank to remove the pump

Ok. The car hasn't been on the road since 2006 so I don't know if the fuel pump is good or not. Does anyone know where to find a regulator with a return for a good price. How bout this one. Its preset at 7psi but is adjustable from 4 to 12 psi.

Mallory #4309 is the most popular bypass reg

You may find some Chinese made copies cheaper
