98 L31 swap into 88 Camaro

I've been reading and searching for a while now and all I can find is where people have used their existing 305 accessories and pullys/brackets etc for the swap. I have a body only no original engine and I'm not sure what I need to purchase or what to even search for to make this work. Is there a belt/pully kit maybe? I'm reading to use a 88 305 water pump but with different pullys/accessories etc. Just need a nudge in the right direction. It's my first engine swap so take it easy on me. Thanks!
I'll be running no AC but would like to in the future if there's a bypass or something ?

Run the '88-'92 Camaro/Firebird water pump and serpentine belt accessory setup from a 305 or 350. It will all bolt up to the L31 350. If you don't want to run A/C, there is an idler pulley available that goes in place of the A/C compressor. Same for the smog pump if you don't want to run that.

Any front accessory drive setup will work. I'd just get a complete serpentine setup off a late tpi car.
you'll need a vortec style intake also.

Re: 98 L31 swap into 88 Camaro

So why won't the drive setup from the 98 Silverado truck work in the car? I still have all of it....and it's a serp setup already...
that's where I'm getting hung up, I can't find a straight answer. Is it hood clearance issues or something?

(Found the ac bypass pulley thanks for that bit of info sir!)

Re: 98 L31 swap into 88 Camaro

Is it hood clearance issues or something?
Generally so, yes.

The hood on this body style is quite low in the front, and lots of things that weren't designed specifically for that hood, have clearance problems with it. The Firebird is even worse about that than Camaro.

Not sure why deleting the AC is A Good Idea, nor why you seem so self-satisfied in identifying this path to a lowering of standards. Seems like a MAJOR downgrade to a car, overall.

The CPFI system on those truck motors is not ... performance oriented ... to say the least. You'll most likely want to get rid of that anyway, if that's a concern to you. It's largely immune to modification other than ripping it all off, throwing it in the trash, and starting over. While the basic motor - i.e. the castings - drop RIGHT INTO any car that accommodates a SBC, and that motor is a VERY good choice for filling an empty hole, the external dress items on it are a different matter. The oil pan for instance won't fit your car. You've got ALOT of swappage in your future. It's not just a yank-and-plop.

Re: 98 L31 swap into 88 Camaro

why not find an LS based engine if youre going to do a swap?
putting a sbc back into a sbc based car seems a bit off to me.

Re: 98 L31 swap into 88 Camaro

It's just a simple carb setup no fuel injection is being used from the truck.

About the AC, I have NONE of the AC components needed and that stuff is outragiously priced on ebay and such. Just the firewall ac box is a few hundred on ebay.

I'd love to go LS but I don't think I have enough mechanical ability or money (looking at the parts lists on here) to pull that swap off in a timely manner.

If anyone has a link to a drive system kit that would work or can point me in the direct needed in would be grateful.

Re: 98 L31 swap into 88 Camaro

SBC >SBC? "Off"? It is a the platform that is literally.....
made
for
the
car.

It seems "off" to you, b/c you're "bought in" to what you've done, to YOUR car.

SOFA is right that there is a lot of switch-swapping of ancillary items...but it's not hard or time consuming.

Re: 98 L31 swap into 88 Camaro

FWIW, I swapped a crate L31 into my 90 Formula and the oil pan wasn't a problem...

Re: 98 L31 swap into 88 Camaro

crate L31
Not necessarily the same thing as what comes in a truck. Truck pans generally have a larger sump, front to rear; and a more gradual slope at the front part, where the exhaust crossover pipe goes below the pan in these cars.

I'll defer to the knowledge of anyone that has installed one out of an actual truck though. I could easily be wRong. And mistaken on that particular point as well.
