hey guys,
i have an 88 iroc with a 305 tuned port and i have the american thunder flowmaster system right now but i want it to be louder and i was thinking of having a shop remove the muffler and put a pipe there, i was wondering if any of u guys have this setup without the muffler and how does it sound, does it sound good?

I hear straight pipes sound like crap. NOt sure how much different it sounds than open headers, but if the police around you are di(ks, they will pull you over.

When I changed my muffler I ran it a little with no muffler and it did sound like crap. You should look into getting a cutout just in front of your cat, especially if like Mark said the cops are di(ks in your area.

Some(most people on here) people will disagree but I think straight pipes can sound good if done right. When I had my lg4 it had no muffler but the whole tailpipe setup after the rear axle was designed to be that way. It y'd about where teh muffler would be and it was setup so it actually flowed pretty even on both sides and had 3" tips. It sounded mean for a 305. I have heard straight pipes that sound like crap however. For instance if you just leave the single pipe open I dont necesarrily like the sound. Headers would make it louder also.

I have an 80 series flowmaster (3 inch all the way) on my 1991 Z28 5.7 TPI and I wanted it to be louder too. So....I had a 3 inch exhaust cut out installed on it. If you leave the cut out wide open.....it kinda of sounds trashy....I leave mine about half way open and it sounds really good. You can hear that agressive low flowmaster tone and its sounds like 2 times louder with the cut out half way open. There are also electronic valves available for the cut outs so you can control the volume from inside your car.....I think that's what I'll end up doing. Now....I know some people will probably reply by saying "cuts outs soundslike crap" which I agree 100% if they are all the way open....but when they are about half way open....it sounds good....to me......

I have no muffler on my bird. I do, however, have the dual cat setup. IMO it sounds excellent. Then again maybe the dual cat setup makes it sound different from the single cat.
I have a nice low rumble and when I get on it it sounds like a friggin open header drag car.

only time I've ever heard straight pipes that sound decent is on an 84 Delta 88, but that guy had some rust holes along his pipes too.
