old style ram horns on a third gen ?

i think theyll clear the engine cradle! close but i think will work!

has anyone ever tried putting on the angled back 45 degree ram horns on one of these cars ?

hmmm...... i am going to try it out on the 82 t/a because am putting in an old 70s 350 engine and it has normal pre-80 6 bolt heads so i cant use the original ESC 7 bolt manifolds and headers are a bitch and cost too much anyways and run too hot and noisy underhood and rust out too fast around here

anyone?

Nope, won't clear. Take another look down the driver's side.

Besides, I've seen enough of that style break that I'd never consider them, anyway. About a decade ago, paid $45 to replace one side when an ear broke off; when the other side broke off two years later and that side was even harder to find, those $75 Hedmans suddenly looked very attractive. Woke up that '71 GMC 3/4 ton 350, even with the 1-1/2" primaries, like you wouldn't believe. Wished I had done it years earlier.

Go with headers. $100 Hedmans w/$100 y-pipe (assuming you don't have emissions concerns - if you're considering non-A.I.R. rams horns, must not be) will run SOOOOOOoooooo much better.

ive never once had or seen or come across a broken ram horn, knock on wood, ive had awesome luck with them, the '63 vette ones are 2.5" exit and you can hone out the 2" exit ones to probably 2 1/4" if are careful. i think these are the least restrictive stock manifolds other than some late model ones found now.

no emissions or inspections in IL for vehicles under 1 ton, can do whatever to any car or pickup over here cept or around chicago area.

so whats the cheapest i could get headers and pipes to get a 70's 350 into the 82 t/a ?
its LG4 and thm200c and 7.5" and the LG4 is blown up bad and ive got a 72 or 73 350 engine, soo....

whats up with driver side that prevents ram horn from clearing ? doesnt the cradle come straight across car to over on driver side judst like it is on pass side ?

i just want to get pre'80 non-ESC controleld SBC engine into a third gen somehow and its the exhaust thats keeping it from happening.

thanks for anything further,

R

The chassis gets in the way. The stock manifolds exit between cyl's 5 & 7.

The Hedmans I mention above are the least expensive way to get headers. The best manifolds that fit the chassis are from the L69 HO carb'd engines, or LB9/L98 TPI-types. However, with a 70's engine, the dipstick is on the driver's side, so the manifold exit gets in the way of the dipstick tube. So, headers are again the solution.

if your worried about the headers getting to hot or rusting then pay a lil more to get them jet hot'd

LB9/L98 TPI-types. However, with a 70's engine,
my 84 Z28 L69 has identical manifolds as the 82 LG4 does, no different, same as in the 80-up ESC pickups too, the pass side exits at #8 and driver side between 5 and 7 as already mentioned.

being that the pass side exits at 8 you would think for sure that theres no way that a ram horn exiting in the center betwee 4 and 6 could ever work, but it does fit, you sure about driver side ?? i havent looked or tried to fit on driver side, but is engine cradle placement on driver side set back further or something ? remember these ram horns curve back 45 degrees out back, especially the driver side one. as long as the flange part of the ram doesnt come down vertically too far and hit top of cradle then alll should be good.

headers in uncoated form would never survive this climate and having them coated is out of my current budget and i need to get the car in driving status, and im not rebuilding an 80's 305 just so can use correct original exhaust, forget that, so,,,

i gotta do something,,

thanks for anything further!

i just got out the driver side angled exit ram horn i have and "dryfitted" it on the T/A and it clears the cradle even better than on the pass side, the driver side manifold exit starts curving back at a higher point and curves back a bit further.

worst case scenario by installing these type manifolds on the car would be to have to possibly grind a little off the rear top side of the engine cradle- possibly,
or i could just install the common Van 3/8" plate spacers that they used for between the motor mount engine block mounted brackets and the engine block, i have some of them around here laying, these are the triangle shaped three hole brackets that you see around on some vehicles in the 70;s mostly Vans.
that would then jack the engine up just enough to probably not have to do any grinding- if i need to grind anything at all once the manifolds are installed.

to start exhaust ill use 67 68 and older impala caprice truck camaro manifold head pipes to get my curve down and horizontal length to hook onto to get pipes run down the length of the car.

we'll go from there as far as running the pipes, probably have to run them side by side or Y or T them together into one larger pipe

wont know til i get that far.

any new thoughts, or ?

thanks for anything further
