Why didn't it have gaskets?
ok i've never thought much of it until now since i'm running completely striaght exhauist out the sides, no muffler and no cat, and it dounds great it leads me to believe i have more of an engine then before thought.
But my exhaust manifolds when i took them off did not have gaskets those suckers fell right off the block and there was just bare metal on each side, we could see the reflection of our hands.
So what does that mean, did they occasionally come like that or has my engine been replaced before?

thats right the factory didnt use gaskets we had a leak on the passenger side of my 88 gmc pickup and when we took the manifold loose there were no gaskets there either ...lol....but it was leaking so we put a new gasket in place and that leak was gone now for the rest of the leaks ...LOL...gonna be a job..

The sound of an engine is in the eye of the beholder. A stock dog a** motor may sound great when uncorked to an amateur, but anyone with experience can tell a stocker from a built engine a mile away, so don't just assume it is more than you thought just because it is loud.

just because its loud doesnt mean its built .....

ever notice the difference in the way harleys sound?? most run strait pipes on a stock motor, makes that pucka blat sound that is just pathetic. go to a bike rally where guys have built custom motors and you might think your hearing a prostock bigblock!! that is sweet. Loud is not necesarily good!!
i agree with laiky ... but then i have never really liked harlys ... over priced and over rated I.M.O. so i maybe biased ... pluse i think you get better performance with a little back pressure from the pipe and muffler ... but then thats a whole other can of worms lol ... tao
