the 40 series is alot louder than the 80 series. depending on what you want. but if it were me i would probably go with the 80 series i think the 40 series would just be obnoxious.

i've never heard a 40 on a 3rd gen but i have owned an 80. i had it on my L69 carb. and i hated the dam thing, sounded ok untill 2k and then it was a drone (u could tell it was holding back the car performance wise too)....but i do like the sound of them on 4th gens and other 350 and my lil sister's bf has one (along with high flow cat) on his 91 Z28 305 TPI and sounds alright but i would have to say the 40 would be a little better for performance but the 80 would give u the dual outlets (40 would be one tailpipe)....also is $240 installed??? i don't really know what a stock cat would cost (i bet it's high tho) but the muffler isn't $100+

I have an 80 series on my v6 and even then it is too loud at times. For my TA I am probably going to just get an electronic cutout so I can control it. But then sometimes it can sound nasty. Just something else for you to consider.
Heh, my friends hate riding in the v6, they say it sounds like a motorboat.

Got a 40 on my GTA and it sounds great. 3" all the way with a gutted cat. Sounds totally different than an 80. 80s have an almost gurgle sound to them. The 40 is just nasty but its not as loud as a 80. Remember, and 80 has 2 outlets and the 40 only has one so the 80 is going to let out more sound. Id recommend the 40 anyday. I had the same setup on my '87 Iroc a few years ago and it sounded pretty much the same.

how would u figure that...u can get the 40 with dual outlets so will it be louder??? and plus the 80 has more crap (baffles) for the exhaust to go thru then hits a dead end where it has to go left or right. the 40 has less crap and goes straight thru (well not really but u know what i mean)... i had to reread what u sed just to make sure i was reading it right...if i'm wrong about this then by all means, let me know, but i doubt i am.to be fair i do have to quote myself

A dual outlet 40 would be louder than a single outlet 40 if you only had the short tailpipes on it like on our cars. Dual outlet 40s are used on fullsize trucks for the dual look but what you are not thinking about is they have about 4 feet of tail pipe per side unlike our cars that use about 2 feet of tail per side on a dual outlet. My old 89 T/A had an 80, my Iroc had an 80 when I bought it before I switched it to a 40, my present '88 GTA has a 40 and my '90 Firebird with a 305 TBI has a 80. I have had plenty of cars to compare. Trust me, an 80 makes more noise than a 40. The 40 sounds better.

80 vs. 40
I switched from a single outlet 40 to a dual outlet 80 with 3.5" tips. It is alot louder now, but I suspect that has something to do with the tips.
Either way you go will sound good imo...

I think Im going to try one of their new Super 40s. I hear they flow 2 times what the old 40s do. Sound pretty cool too.

I have the 80 series on my car with the 3 inch catback, with working CAT. It is pretty damn loud. My step-dad has a 90 GT Mustang with 2 40 series mufflers and it does not even touch mine in the sound department. I would say it is the motor I have, but his motor is just as nasty, so..... I think it just depends on the entire setup as to how the car sounds. From the motor to whether you have manifolds or headers to the size of the exhaust pipes.

just yesterday i out a 40 series on mine and it is a dual exhaust setup, in my classic industries camaro catalog there is a 40 series with dual exhaust outlets and thats the one i got. but mine is from a z28 (used) so it has the rectangle tips. i think the 40 sounds great, but it is annoying at like 2500 rpms if you arent accelerating in like 2nd gear or 3rd gear, so i just shift and its back to burble.
