magnaflow..

well today i finally bit the bullet and had a nice exhaust system installed from the y pipe back. magnaflow high flow cat, 3 inch all the way back with a magnaflow muffler. i love the way this thing sounds when you get on it, but at an idle you can hardly hear the exhaust at all!

Is this just what i have to live with or are certain cats louder than others?

Re: magnaflow..

I have the magnaflow cat, but that goes back into a flowmaster muffler. Mine is quite loud and deep at idle. Just pulling into the parking spot slowly causes a neighbors van alarm to go off every day. Each muffler, though, has its own sound so yours may just be quieter at idle than others.

Re: magnaflow..

ahh, maybe because the magnaflow muffler is a glasspack of sorts, it will get louder with time?

I had the Magnaflow catback in my 4th gen 99 Z28. As the packing material wears off, it gets louder. I really liked the sound on my last car! If you prefer louder, you can always get a cutout as well.

Re: magnaflow..

I have a LS1 cat back system, on my 87 L98.

Magnaflow cat, and Magnaflow cat-back, with a bullet-style Magnaflow muffler, located just after the cat, before the axle.

QUIET is a good description. At WOT, you know its there, but still wouldn't be considered loud. At cruise speed, the exhaust not is nearly non-existent.

I'm considering swapping the Magnaflow bullet for a Flowmaster outlaw, Boom Tube exit, or NO muffler at all, and letting my cat act as the muffler.

Re: magnaflow..

ya it sounds pretty good at WOT but just cruisin around its really discouraging.. For $750 i would have hoped to get somethin a bit louder but i dunno if its somethin i can dispute with the exhaust shop now that its all said done and paid for. i suppose i could have a pipe made to put in place of the cat but what a waste of 200 bucks for a high flow cat. holy crap, just looked at jegs and the same cat is only $95 bucks???!! that is some crazy mark up..

Re: magnaflow..

Headers is what will make your car louder. That and a bigger displacement engine with heads/cam.

I run a Magnaflow on my car and it's pretty loud, even at idle.

Re: magnaflow..

I have stock manifolds w/ a magnaflow cat, 3" catback and Magnaflow muffler. It's pretty quiet at idle. Louder than stock, and definitely better sounding...but pretty quiet overall. I've put about 2500 miles on this new exhaust and it really hasnt gotten noticeably louder.

Re: magnaflow..

After a few months, mine "mellowed" out.

I heard it right after the previous owner )friend of mine) put it on, and I wasn't crazy about it. I'm assuming a lot of it was from the cat "breaking in". Now I like it, it's just TOO quiet.

Re: magnaflow..

I have a magnaflow 3" high flow catback and a qtp electric exhaust cutout. The magnaflow sounds great. I love the sound. WOT is the best. I have a manual so its easier to keep the sound up while i'm cruisin. I rarely open the cutout unless theres a mustang next to me.. Too bad he cant hear his exhaust over mine

$750 for a magnaflow system??? where did you buy it?? I only paid $350..

Re: magnaflow..

i have to drive my car to work every day so i dont have the down time to set up/modify a magnaflow catback system thats made for a 4th gen. my exhaust was all handbuilt by an exhaust shop (stan's headers) no catback kit. they do really nice work but as i found out they're pricey

i kinda regret it now for just a little more than that i coulda bought some hookers and a y pipe and just spent some time on it making it all work.. oh well this 18 yr old learned his lesson

Re: magnaflow..

it took my exhaust guy an hour or two to fab up everything and get it all installed. mine is a DD too. I only paid $70 for the installation. You live you learn I suppose. Your exhaust will liven up and get a little louder.
