GMMG on LB9?

I toying around with the idea of getting a GMMG chambered exhaust system for my car. Madhammer.com sells the system for $625, with free shipping.

I'm a little concerned about how it will sound on a stock, peanut cammed LB9. I like a smoother sound, with little popping.

It's either this or the Magnaflow cat-back, which is $100 cheaper.

I don't want an obnoxiously loud exhaust, especially on a 15 second car.

Also, I'll be adding headers down the line, that should make it slightly louder. The cat will be staying, if I go GMMG, because I heard it's effectively the muffler.

Re: GMMG on LB9?

I'd like to hear some opinions on this, before I drop this kind of money.

Re: GMMG on LB9?

Id listen to some videos online to make up your mind as to if you like it or not. My buddy has an SLP loudmouth on his iroc with a high comp 355 and it is LOUD. Both systems do not have a muffler (slp has a resonator and GMMG has chambered piping). Both are going to be very very loud. I would look into a magnaflow if u want something with a nice tone and not too terribly loud.

I've heard both, but it's hard to tell how loud an exhaust is on YouTube, when there is no reference sound, and low quality videos.

Re: GMMG on LB9?

Unless you're looking for something stainless, Listen to a few Hooker catback clips too. I've had one on my car going on 6 years, and it's pretty bearable unless you tromp on it, then it sounds great I think.

Without shortie headers, I'd think it might be a little quieter...

Well from personal experience its going to be LOUD. If your saying u dont want obnoxiously loud then i would go with something else for an exhaust. Also there are much cheaper alternatives out there than the GMMG. Its a great exhaust dont get me wrong but might be more than you need or more than you bargained for.

Re: GMMG on LB9?

I have a Borla catback on my car. I like how it's not load under normal load. The when you stomp on it, it will turn heads. You can also tune it to the noise level you want. I've had many people hear it and stop me to ask what was I running. Currently I have a bone stock 305. I'm building a 383 and I will keep running the system. It sounds nothing like a Flowmaster exhaust. I had that on my car before and took it off when I seen the Borla system on one of the TNN shows back in 1999. I'm glad I did.

Re: GMMG on LB9?

I just installed a Hooker catback on my car with headers and no cat and its just perfect......the tone will sell anyone on it and it gets plenty loud but highway driving is quiet as can be

I love the sound of the Borla.

This is what you have?

What is all the extra piping for? All the other cat-backs I've seen have fewer pieces. The system is quite expensive though, but I guess if I was prepared to pay 625, another 100 bucks won't make a difference. Do you have any sound clips?

The Magnaflow is starting to sound pretty good, but I hate the massive exhaust tips.

Re: GMMG on LB9?

I have a chambered exhaust on a mild 350, its pretty loud. Although it sounds mean as hell at idle and screams WOT.

The Magnaflow #16829 Kit sounds perfect for you. Quiet tone at idle and screams at WOT.

This one is closer to what I have done, except I'm keeping the cat so it won't be as raspy as this.

Re: GMMG on LB9?

I have a medium length chambered powerstick in place of my I pipe and mine is LOUD, but sounds like a diesel truck.... I have no cat so I dunno if adding one would improve the sound.....

Re: GMMG on LB9?

I second the Magnaflow, I had it behind a decent 355 with hooker 2055's and no cat and it I will never run another brand muffler again. I had a flowmaster before that, sounded like a pick up truck. The Magnaflow sounds great, isnt teribbly loud at low load and it opens right up under throttle. Dont let the tips get you, I hate cars with overside exhuast tips but I really do love the way the 3.5" tips look on our cars, fills out the backend.
