My Z is currently in the paint process and a friend of mine is itching to shave the handles. But I found out that the track will not let cars with shaved handles race. They said "For saftey reasons, we need an external way of entering the vechile in case of an acident". And then I was at my buddies house and his door poppers wouldnt pop. Soleniod took a crap, and had to call AAA to break in, and then I changed my mind about shaved handles.

Even if they un-lock it, how do you plan on opening the door??
What could AAA do that you can't do yourself? There is no way of opening the door without handles.....unless you break the window.....and use the interior handle....
Not to mention if you had your keys, you crawl through the hatch......

There is another alternative to shaving the door handles. I'm not sure what you guys are wanting to accomplish, be it looks, or sleeker lines. If you're wanting a clean look, use some door handles from a later model GM truck. Ive done a couple 3rd gens with 2000 S-10 truck handles and it looked great. The handles are recessed and have a cleaner look. Although not as clean looking as shaving them, it does offer another alternative and one that will allow you to still go to the track and race. Hmm...I wonder if you could use handles from a BMW??

Its acually ugly to watch AAA break in. They get a rubber wedge, and ram it into the door at the top of the window. Once thats in place they have a small airbag they slip into the crack, pump it up, which tweeks the top of the door enough to stick the tool down to the handle and open the door from the inside. Around 65 bucks for him to come out and bend your door frame, and chip the paint around the door.

I don't particularly like the look of shaved door handles. It doesn't seem any "sleeker" without door handles than it does with them.
I guess I am just weird.

Verts are easier. You open the trunk, pull the solenoids tab, and boom you jump in. MUCH easier. I am shaving the locks, but after seeing those S10 handles, it gets me thinking... hmm....

Shaved handles, locks, and antenna.
Remote keyless entry w door poppers.
you can also wire a fused button (well hidden of coarse) on the underside of the car (or wherever) in case your tops are on, windows up and your remote dies.

Sam I'm really interested in your fender vents. I'm assuming they came out of a 2nd gen T.A. are they funtional, do they let heat out or are they more of a looks thing?

Shaved door & all electric on 3rd gen
I am in the middle of shaving my door handles on my '86 T/A right now, also smoothing out the rear hatch key hole. I put a second battery in (both in the trunk space) with an isolater, so if the battery dies, I will always have a way in with the remote(s). Also putting a backup drivers side switch in a hidden location (just in case).
Second battery also controls the amps, so I never run out of power.

Coulda swore I posted my old 92 RS before...Guess not. Mine were from a C/K series truck. I found a totaled out truck in a junkyard, and both doors were trashed, but the handles were good, and the couple of inches around them. I think the S-series trucks used the same handles.
The screws in the bottom pic, were just used to hold it for good alignment, and scribe a cut mark on the existing door. The screw holes were filled.
At the same time, I shaved the nose emblem, and the radio antenna.
I like the shaved gas door idea. Gotta devise a good way to refill, without opening the hatch...Like RedRaif does.

Try 4th gen door handles first. They look really sleek and bolt right in. I just bought a used pair for $20, cheap and easy mod.
Shave the antenna though, antennas are so ugly.

man I must be getting old. You guys all are worried if your battaries go dead in the remote or the car itself. Do like the old school hotrods.
You run a hidden emergeny release cable under the car.
A Good friend of mine makes all kinds of hot rod stuff. Thats whos CnC I always use for stuff.
anyways this is the kit they make for such times

Finally found (sorta) the Hot Rod magazine articles the gave me the idea. At least, a list of when the articles were published, otherwise, I'd scan the articles, and link to the pics of them.
