Coolant and Windshield Tanks Delete/Relocate

I finally got sick and tired of those ugly yellow tanks that take up more than half of the engine bay, so last saturday i decided to get rid of them. I took off the old tanks and relocated the charcol canister into the front bumper. I used the exsisting mounts on the canister and just drilled into the bumper. I then used a duel tank out of a 89 lincoln town car (yeah i know a ford product in a gm, it kills me!) and placed it where the charcol canisters spot. i then simply extrended the hoses and then you have it.

Tell me what think, Comments?!

I did the same thing back in '03, but I used a combo tank out of a 91 Exploder.

when you use a coolant/washer tank is it a PITA to install or does it just plop in?

Re: Coolant and Windshield Tanks Delete/Relocate

If you are talking about the (for example) explorer one shown above, it just sits there, only problem was there is a charcoal canister in the way that must be removed or relocated. The only part that I could think of that may be a PITA for some people was soldering the two lines to the washer's pump so the pump can get power. Other then that mine just sits there with some black zip ties to make sure it doesnt move.

Re: Coolant and Windshield Tanks Delete/Relocate

I did away with the charcoal canister completly in my car.

The whole unit is held in place with the original Ford 10mm self tapping screws into the Radiator Core support on my Formula.

Also, I cut the plug and a couple inches of wiring from the Exlpoder, so all I had to do was splice the power and ground wires from my factory harness into the wires for the Ford pump.

Re: Coolant and Windshield Tanks Delete/Relocate

Thats the same thing I did, I left a bit of extra wire from the plug but i soldered them onto to original lines. Just wanted to make sure they wouldn't move. I like it better now but I think Im going to get a smaller one and put it under the hood latch cover. I saw someone else on the boards who did it and right now I only have my alarm under there.

sorry for the late reply. IT goes in pretty easily i went to the junk yard and loosened two bolts on the tank. Then i just drilled two holes into the engine bay where i mounted the new tank, and it just sits there. I did however use two fender washers that i squared off each side because of the way it fits in the mounting holes on the lincoln tank. its a 30 min project

yeah i will say that the filter is not in the best position but i did run some house 4 in ducting from each fog light, in the front bumper, to a tee and then hosed that right to the filter running inside the passenger front fender. hopfully it will have just as much airflow as before.

Re: Coolant and Windshield Tanks Delete/Relocate

Here's the way I did it (almost). I took the red resevoir out and put in another one of the white universal ones for coolant so they are both identical now.

I got rid of the washer fluid, and as for the coolant, I just bought one of those summit universal catch cans for a wopping $10 I think, and installed it in front of the core support. I still need to paint it flat balck, but you get the idea. (ignore the lambo door hinges I took those off)

That's a really good idea. Wish I had thought of it before I puller the two tanks last week and paionted them both wite to hide that nasty yellowing effect. Maybe this is a project for a later date though.

The intake is just getting hot, underhood air anyways, so I wouldn't worry about that. I'd suggest building an insulated wall though, so the filter only gets outside cooler air. Like, through the fender gaps, or cut a hole though the tray under it, for the filter to hang out under there etc.

Re: Coolant and Windshield Tanks Delete/Relocate

Okay, I just got back from the wreckers with a mercury Marquis washer tank (same as in the lincoln and ford crown vic)
Do you have to use the ford washer pump? I noticed when I pulled the tank the washer fluid flowed right past the pump and through the hose. I'm thinking that I can just attach the ford hose running from the pump into the GM pump and it should work shouldn't it?

if you're going to go through the trouble, splurge on some body work and get them fender walls smoothed out and painted.

Re: Coolant and Windshield Tanks Delete/Relocate

C.M.Jones, the red round "thing" was a summit overflow bottle that I ended up taking out to replace it with another coolant tank just like the white universal one on the pass side. SO, now I have 2 of the exact same tanks in the front, 1 for coolant and 1 for windshield squirt. The tray was stock, I just cout out the air filter holders and fabbe'd up the tank holders to go in place.

yes GM did make a combo tank. My father had one in his GMC Sonoma. (then again he also had a ford ranger so i could be getting them confused)

Re: Coolant and Windshield Tanks Delete/Relocate

Im running a 4th gen overflow, and a 4th gen washer tank. Both of these options are quite a bit more work. However I dont have a spot for an explorer part...or I would have done that instead.

The overflow requires a pretty decent sized hole cut in the battery tray. And the washer bottle requires some inginuity to install up front.

You dont have to cut your battery tray to install the 4th gen coolant tank.I mounted mine underneath using two bolts to hold it in place. There are four threaded bungs welded to the batt tray. One is used by the batt hold down bolt.I used that & the one opposite that for the 4th gen install. The washer tank is mounted angainst the rad support.Just under the plastic cover between the bumper & radiator.

I'm not seeing something right. If you mounted it underneath, and used the hole used by the battery hold down, how is the battery being held down? Are you using that hole for both the tank and the battery?

I already mounted a 4th gen washer tank in the nose, and I really want to get rid of the coolant overflow tank on the wheel well. I was thinking of dointg the 4th gen coolant tank as well. The only thing was getting aroung to cutting the battery tray, but if I don't have to cut it. I'm doing what you did. Oh, how/where is the spout sticking up.

Re: Coolant and Windshield Tanks Delete/Relocate

Yes the batt hold down doubles to hold the 4th gen coolant/batt tray in place. The filler next squeezes thru the space between the batt & fender.I had to heat the neck with a heat gun to clear both the batt/fender.I did this by stuffing an old shirt in the neck to keep it from collapsing.Once it was soft i bent it slightly towards the battery.Just enough to clear the fender.Heres a few pics. However this is an old mod & i posted on this wayyyyy back in 06.

here you can see both bolts

here's the batt hold down bolt

Re: Coolant and Windshield Tanks Delete/Relocate

Bump with a quick question. I used one of the Anco universal washer reservoir/pump and mounted it in the trunk because I have no space up front.

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

It works great, but the only problem is when I brake moderately, fluid dribble out of the windshield sprayers just enough to leave a mess on the hood.

Any suggestions? My mechanic recommended using a relief valve so that pressure must be high to pass through to the sprayer.

I found some old pics I took when I was doing my setup. My mod can be done with some sheet metal, (2) universal tanks from Napa (8 bux a piece) and the stock TPI dual air filter filler panel.

Is that a 4th gen tank? Overflow container or washer fluid container?

It looks that was a Camaro in your pics, judging by the battery on the passenger side. But I see no reason I couldn't do that to my driver's side battery too.

Re: Coolant and Windshield Tanks Delete/Relocate

thats the 4th gen coolant overflow/battery tray... You might be able to fit it over on the driver's side, but its gonna be a chore.

My 87 TA had the battery on the driver's side, but my 86 had it on the passenger side. So your best bet is to just put the battery on the passenger side, regardless of what it is from the factory. If your charcoal canister is on the passenger side, just re-locate it to the drivers... Piece of cake.

Not a piece of cake. The factory air filter housing is over there & takes up even more room than the charcoal cannister.

What's below the battery on the driver's side that would make this so hard to do?

What's below the battery on the driver's side that would make this so hard to do?
Well on both sides you have the thin, triangular brace that usually gets in the way. But thats not the main issue. The issue is the tray was designed to fit on the passenger side. So the battery hold down would be burried in under the rad. support. And the coolant overflow 'dipstick' would be oriented funny.

But its possible...I would hate for you to cut that hole in your tray and find out it doesnt work though. I had the 4th gen bottle mounted in my 87, however I couldnt bring myself to cut into the 86, so Im searching alternative options.

S10Wildside: did you have any issues with bolting the tray down? The holes that I had to make didnt last long. Especially the hold down bolt. I was gonig to weld a nut under it this time around...

i used the 4th gen washer too even tho i hated to put weight even closer to the front end. i was planning on putting each of them behind the fender wells close to the fire wall but this was a lot easier

I'm still mocking up everything in the engine compartment, so for now only the hole is cut. I'll come up with a reliable way to secure the tank to the car.

I'm working with a 91 Trans Am convertible. The battery was originally on the driver side, but now the PCM and Corvette Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) module are going into the original battery location. The battery is moving to where the charcoal canister and air filter were. The charcoal canister is moving to the top of the LS1 gas tank, which is the stock location for the LS1 charcoal canister. I'm building a brand new harness for everything, so the location of components really doesn't matter at this point.
