fab an air cleaner for a carb
anyone ever fab up an air intake for a carburator? I have an idea for one. Was thinking... I don't have much hood clearance between hood and carb, and my 14" cleaner hits the hood towards the front of it. But the height is decent right at the carb. What if you fabbed up a cold air intake like the fuel injected cars. No big 14" cleaner, just the size of the carb. Then use piping down to the the drivers front headlight area and leave it there, or cut a hole and go under the front bumper area. Would be similar to a blow through carb turbo setup, just without the turbo. I would think a 3.5" or 4" pipe should flow enough air all the EFI'S piping is about this size. Any thoughts?

Re: fab an air cleaner for a carb
well I used to have a stock carb air cleaner. I have a 350 with edelbrock rpm intake, 1/2" nitrous plate, and a holley dp carb. I had a moroso drop base with a k&n air filter 2 3/4" tall and it worked ok until I put new poly motor mounts in this weekend. Now the hood hits. only need about .5" to .75" drop down more and it will work. but if the air cleaner sat further back it would probably be ok. A carb hat might work too? who makes cheap hats?

Theres a guy around here that fabbed a cooking pan into a carburator hat maybe you can get some tips form him LOL .... But hey try this a TPI air cleaner with a low rise carb hat and a tube. The tpi box should mount up in the nose of that camaro.

The fact is that you’re opening a whole big can of worms that you may not intend. Carburetors are basically mechanical devices which “try” to figure out how much air (mass) is going into the engine and then they “leak” the appropriate amount of fuel. Since it has no real way of measuring the airflow nor accurately metering the fuel, it does so by approximating based on conditions going over the carburetor and through the bores/across that fuel leak.
What I’m getting at is that carburetors, as tuned from the factory, are designed to deal with a large, stagnant mass of air over the barrels, either by a large, open space inside the filter or open air. Ducting air to them creates all sorts of unexpected problems because now instead of a large mass of fairly still air to suck from, they have fast moving air usually fed across some parts of the carb and right at others.
If there is any doubt, just look at the blow through, ‘charged carbureted guys and all their discussions about carb hats… a lot of “this worked for me but not for him, these tend to work well, these don’t work…” Nutshell, you’re looking for something that presents the carburetor with as still an air mass as possible and with any motion in that air mass going parallel to the vents (it’s not uncommon for the blow through guys to extend the bowl vents a ways down the ducting/tubing feeding the carb hat).

this may help ... back in 1980 monte carlo had the 3.8 turbo and maybe buick's used the same setup .... anyways they had a carburator hat with a snorkel tube running to an air cleaner can ..... they used a 4 barrel rochestor so it could be a option if you can find one.
