Do you own a lathe?
These need to be pretty precise to work... I have the summit version, and it was $60. I'd be hard pressed to make one for that price... If I bought the material, I might be able to get it cheaper then that, but if I were to break/wear out one lathe bit, i'd be over the cost. Not worth it to me.

ah, in that case, it's a brutally simple tool.
I have mine in my garage, and a digital calipers. I can measure it for you if needed. I'll give it a day for someone else to reply if they can find it off google....

The journals of a SBC and most other blocks are different sizes in the block. The installation/removal tool is basically a press to allow you to press in and out the cam bearings.
Here's the instructions with OD dimensions from the summit site. The ID size is the journal of the camshaft. The Summit tool is cheap because it will only do SBC bearings. The universal kits are $200+

86, don't mean to hijack too bad but I'm from a tool&die background as well. Got started at 21 back in 98' and recently left the field. Illinois was a MAJOR region for me for motorola, nokia, a few closure molders, etc. Good times. These guys are right though, just spend the 60 bux and buy the tool. Use your maching skill and desire on making parts for our cars you think we might all need, i.e. a throttle body spacer that you can tap (NPT) or mill for fuel injectors. I just designed and made one myself for my setup. WORKS sweet! I can port NOS or fuel injectors in if need be.
