2" I.D.?? Whats the wall thickness? And what are you using for bushings/bushing housings? I hope youre at least upgrading to poly or sperhical bushings in the process? Are you TIG welding them or MIG?

Post pics when you get started for sure.

Re: Im going to fabricate Rear lower control arms from scratch

LOL I was dreaming this up yesterday. My I idea is to use some 2" o.d. x 1 3/4 i.d square tubing and machine some ends with a bit more meat on the o.d to get welded on. The shop I work at does stick and mig so I should be covered on that end. The only reason I thought of it was I saw some tubing in the scrap bin and it looks like it will work, so I figured why not, I've already replicated a maf housing out of 4" sch 40 pipe and some angle iron.

I was thinking the same originally and then I found these:

I'm not gonna mess with it; I'm just gonna get those.

We had one member make a set of offset ones with square tubing for his large tire/wheel upgrade recently. Might get some ideas from his build.

Here's the link to his post. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/fabr...et-street.html

Those were actually a set of Lakewood LCA's that he modified, but same difference right?

If I ever made my own, they're gonna be out of billet aluminum & offset of course. Benefits of access to a machine shop

Re: Im going to fabricate Rear lower control arms from scratch

Way big overkill!!! I used 1.250" moly with .090 wall and poly bushed moly ends with 3/4" threads and a 5/8" center hole.... No reason to put all that extra dead weight hangin' down there!!!

My car isn't even close to done, but a buddy volunteered to test the bars in his mid 11 '83 Camaro, they work great!!!

Re: Im going to fabricate Rear lower control arms from scratch

I plan on constructing these trailer arms, as soon as i sell my vw engine i rebuilt for profit. I gotta a speeding ticket to take care, of. The dimensions are different now, im planning on tig welding them for sure, i just ran out of argon today, and picked up some lanthanum 2% electrodes also, so just as soon as i get the vw engine sold. I gotta say German engineering is another world

Re: Im going to fabricate Rear lower control arms from scratch

I wonder if it would be worth it to make a 1 piece "I" beam type from 387 or 316/304 stainless. Think they might twist?

Re: Im going to fabricate Rear lower control arms from scratch

I apologize, I'm thread jacking here, I'll search it. I just think its a waste to start a new thread instead of adding new ideas to an exhisting thread and give more information in one place rather than look all over the forum for bits of information. I'm sorry!!

I suppose you could, but why??? I beam structure would be more subject to twist then round tube moly, and much more difficult to machine for bushings, mounting hardware, etc.... If not moly, a size larger with a bit more wall thickness in DOM would do fine.

Not to mention that stainless will fatigue over time, and is $$$

Sure is pretty though

Re: Im going to fabricate Rear lower control arms from scratch

Lol I was bored, just throwing ideas out there. Imagine two 3/4" (maybe bigger) round bars, or similar square tubing, ran side by side with the ends welded on. That would twist too but, they would look really cool! Just trying to think outside the box (square tubing).
