Think you don't need a cage in your fast car, or that you can throw one in yourself?

This is why fast cars need well built cages.

Thank goodness for the cage, you can't even tell the car is a camaro or what kind a car it was after the wreck. A professionally installed cage can save your life a proven by that piture.

Sounds like so many. Gotta have more power before they can drive what they have.

Just more proof of my point.

If you are going to spend the money on HP, you better spend some on Safety!

Wow.

I know the guys that run bonnieville are pretty strict on tires, if your fast, it's Goodyear land speed tires and that's about it.

makes me want to put a cage in my car. i actually watched 2 guys die in a formula 350 when i was a teenager. the car flipped and it looked like a crushed soda can.

The car was set up properly by John Harrison of Houston TX. A personal friend of mine since the early 90s, the Driver is experienced between the road surface and the speed he had problems a few years ago you really can't take anything away from his ability.

Re: Think you don't need a cage in your fast car, or that you can throw one in yourse

Just like the Silver State Challenge. Cars running at specific speeds need tires rated for those speeds. The high speed runs at Bonneville are no different and many tires in the super high speed vehicles are solid.

Without seeing video of the crash, it's hard to determine exactly what caused it. A tire could have blown out. Something on the car may have failed. Normally if the aerodynamics of a vehicle switches from downforce to lift, something has failed such as a broken spoiler. If you're running those speeds without some kind of rear spoiler for downforce, you're just an accident waiting to happen. That OEM spoiler isn't designed for those speeds.

I feel safer in my race car going down the track at 150 mph than I do driving my F350 in rush hour down the freeway.

It was not my intent to bash the driver or the builder with this thread. If anything it is to comend the builder on doing a good job making the car safe in the event of an accident.

I simply wanted to use this relevent example to show people who want to build a fast car but think they don't need a cage or other safety equipment as this has come up on here in recent times.

you bring up a good point Johnny. when do you actually need a cage, and is it safe or needed on the street? ive heard its something to whack your head on, on the street with no helmet. but after looking at those pics,...maybe its not a bad idea?

Cage needed, sure.

Not throwing it in yourself... I trust what I build more than a lot of the "professionally built" crap that I see at the tracks all the time...

I agree, I've seen a ton of cages that would never pass tech, and a lot of guys with welders that can't make a good penetrating bead.

I wrecked my former F350 twice, both times at high speed. I can't say a lot of good things about that truck but I can say that both times I drove/limped it home, while the vehicles that hit me looked a lot like the car above.
