I went to get some keys made for my 1989 formula that has the vats system on it. The pontiac guy seemed to think this was impossible. He kept saying it started in 90. I know it has it on it and its not just someone replaced the lock. Someone tried to hotwire it a year ago in Atlanta, they couldn't get it running, and when I fixed everything I had to pull the key cylinder out of my old part and put it in the new one to get the car running. I finally told him just to test the key get me one that matches the resistance, and cut it, and I would buy it with out question. Anyways,

My question how many people have a 1989 f-body with the vats system on it, (the little chip in the key). I just want to know if its really strange my car had it.

1989 was the first year for VATS on a Camaro. Check out the brochure!

 

89 was the first year for the vats on camaro's and firebirds. my 89 iroc has it also.

 

I believe 88 was the first year for Firebirds. It was an option on the GTA

 

89 was the first standard year, i think it was an option for a few years before, if not on camaro, firebird at least....but it was standard equipment for all in 89.....my 89 rs has it
