Z28 15" Wheels

I was wondering, was the 15"Z28 style wheel available on base Camaros from 82-87?

I know it was not available on 82-84 and am pretty sure it was not available on the later models until the RS came out. I am positive the 82-84 wheels were Z28 specific. Someone chime in and clarify the 85 up models....

Only available on the RS models (which started in 87)

I have seen them on sport coupes but it's not factory.

Never. For those years, only the 1987 RS (limited availability) and all Z28's came with the 5-spoke 15-incher.

Are you sure about that? I have yet to see an 87 with those rims. Only seen them with the "rally" type rims. I'm just saying the 87 still looked like an 82 as it didn't have grounds effects yet and the Z28 rims didn't look good on cars without ground effects. In 1988 the RS re-appeared with Z28 rims as standard.

The RS "reappeared", in 87. With GFX and the z28 wheels. It was very limited in availbility and colour--only 2.8L V6.

yeah the reason you've never seen an 87 with those is because they came on the RS in 87 and the RS was only released in california in red, white, or black. I have never seen an 87 RS, they are pretty rare from what i understand

There were 6,618 1987 RS's produced. They were sold in California only and had very limited options available. GM wanted to test the market with a car that visually looked like a Z28 but without the insurance premiums. Here in Arizona, I have seen a number of them, considering we're California's neighbors.

In 1988, the RS test market was expanded to include Florida and Texas. 7,038 were sold.

The only coupe (non-rs/z28/iroc) to ever receive the 15x7 5 spokes was the 88 Camaro.

The coupes had a steel 15x7" rally wheel, silver with silver or black centercaps, starting in 85. Prior to 85, the coupes used the 14x7 steel rally wheels exclusively.

By 89 the coupe was discontinued and only the RS and IrocZ remained.

82-84 SC Rally Rim 14"
85-87 SC Rally Rim 15"
88 SC "Z28 Rim" 15"
89 & 90 RS 15" "Z28" Rim
91+ RS Flat 16" Rim

82-87 Z28 "Z28 Rim" 15" as pictured above
90+ Z28 Flat 16" Rim

85-87 IROC 16" Rim 1 line in spoke
88-90 IROC 16" Rim 2 lines in spoke

is that correct???

Did the coupe (non-ground effects version) hang around till 89? I thought 87 was the last year for the plain coupe. Actually I've seen a 87 RS before on Ebay way back. I thought someone added ground effects and Z28 rims to a plain coupe. I thought the regular SC carried on from 82-87 (87 RS in Cali). Then RS with ground effects came about in 88 for everyone else. Here's what I thought as far as the rims:

82-87 Rally Rims (not sure when 15" came available) 87 RS does not apply here.
87 RS, 88-90 Z28 style rims standard and only rim available for RS.
91-92 old style Z28 style rims standard for V-6 and new style 16" flat rims available with V-8 RS.

The last plain sport coupe was in 87

87 and 88 were the test years for the RS

88 was the only year the sport coupe had ground fx

89 and on had RS as the base model

1987 was the last year for the coupe without ground efx. In 1988 the Coupe looked just like a basic Z28 from 87. Flat hood, gfx, no foglights, 15x7 Z28 style wheels with gray "camaro" centercaps. Some had the typical 3 piece spoiler with the 3rd brake light, others got a wing similar to the 91-92 Z28 wing, but much more stubby (2" tall) and with a 3rd brake light. The 88 coupes are easy to spot since instead of Z28 or RS the GFX read "Camaro". They're kinda odd, but not really rare. Around here you can't throw a stick without hitting one.

For the exact years of wheel changeovers and availability, a person would have to get ahold of all the dealer brochures from 82-92. However, I can tell you what wheels were available for the camaro.

14x7" Steel rally wheels, chrome trim rings, black centercaps with camaro emblems.

15x7" Steel rally wheels, chrome trim rings, silver/black centercaps, with Camaro emblems.

14x7" Aluminum Berlinetta wheels, gold anodized, with gold caps, berlinetta emblems

14x7" Aluminum LT wheels, same as above, but in silver, with silver Camaro caps. 87 ONLY!

15x7" Aluminum Z28/RS wheels, available every year from 82-92 on one camaro or another. They were gray, gold, red, white, teal, charcoal, etc. Caps were gray or black, with Camaro, Z28, RS, IrocZ, etc emblems. By far the most common wheel used.

15x7" Aluminum Iroc wheels, 89-90 Iroc only, they look just like the 16" 88-90 Iroc wheels, only smaller. Same centercaps as 16" wheel.

16x8" Aluminum Iroc wheels, 85-87 IrocZ only. IrocZ centercaps, gold or silver on black emblems.

16x8" Aluminum Iroc Wheels, 88-90 IrocZ only. IrocZ centercaps, black text on silver background.

16x8" Aluminum Z28/RS wheels, 91-92 Z28 and RS only. Optional on the RS. Camaro caps.

I left out the hubcaps, since A) I'm not a berlinetta expert. B) they were long gone by 1995 when I got interested in these cars. and C) cause I just simply don't know.

I forgot to mention, the Iroc wheels were gold or silver, no other colors. The only exception is the 89-90 15" Iroc wheel which to my knowledge was only available in silver. Same goes for the 91-92 Z28/RS wheels, only silver, but with various accent colors, such as red, gray, and white.

I think I may have seen some black 15" ones, not sure if they were stock... (on a 1990 RS)

I know for a fact that my old 1984 SC had 15x7", Grey/Black Z28 Wheels from the factory....I've been told it was an option.

There were some black ones as well as teal, red & white red. These wheels, of course, matched the body color of the car. As for the last comment...I disagree. Anyone can stick Z28 rims on a regular Camaro. My 82-85 new Camaro brochures says the 15" Z28 rims were not an option on the SC coupes. They were, in fact, Z28 specific rims.

Yeah I've got some brochures too---no Z28 wheels for 82-86 sport coupes....PLUS it would be listed in the Camaro White book as an option--which it is not

My 83 Coupe had 15x7" Z28 wheels, with black accents and Camaro centercaps. They matched the car perfectly and could have passed for original equipment, but the truth is that I bought them from a guy who owned an 88 Coupe.

Wow, that's alot of wheel info. Forgot one set. 88 Iroc 15x7's They are the 'normal' 5 spoke 15x7 camaro wheels painted all silver or all gold with an Iroc center cap. No aluminum showing. I have a set of silver ones on my 91 Jimmy. Got mine from a dealer--the story goes that the buyer of the 88 Iroc wanted the 16's, so the dealer ordered a set and pulled the 15's. Anyway, they are nothing real special, but not real common either.
