How unusual is this...
my buddy has the car pictured here. it's an 86 Trans Am WS6 with the LB9 and an automatic. the "odd" part is that it has the hood bird from the factory and two-tone, red and silver interior...i searched the internet and only found ONE, a 1985, that had the combo of the hood bird and the two tone red and silver interior...

Re: How unusual is this...
The big hood hood chicken was an option from 85-87 if i remember correctly. It's not incredibly rare. Someone might have an approximate production count, but it's something that can be added easily.
Re: How unusual is this...
RPO code DX1 is what the option is if it's factory. As Drew said, easy to add afterwords as the sticker is being reproduced.
I'm not aware of a source that would give accurate information as to production figures. I don't see them all that often, but given the fact the option disappeared after 1987, they are confined to a limited year span of the ThirdGen.

Re: How unusual is this...
I don't think there's anything particularly special/odd/rare about the combination of the hood bird/two-toned interior, anymore than, say, T-Tops and two-tone interior; what I'm saying is the two options are unrelated, so it seems odd to try and find a link between the two.
Re: How unusual is this...
Agree with Puma. The DX1 was simply an option on the Trans AM only in 1986. So any Trans Am could really have it ordered. It is said that GM did not keep track of how many vehicles had X option along with Z option (combinations).
Compnine only has Canadian VINs for ThirdGens older than 1990. They show 1287 (Canadian) Trans Ams with the RPO code DX1 out of 3412 Canadian Trans Ams in their database. Of those 1287 Canadian Trans Ams with DX1, they show 137 of them were Bright Red with Silver Aero while 148 of the 1287 were solid Red.
Unfortunately, currently, there is no known source/database to get non-Canadian figures for this year.

Re: How unusual is this...
well, this car is an original DX1 car. my buddy has had it since 1992. it's all original down to the cat/all emissions. the only mod is a CD player.
the reason i tied those two options together is because the only time i've ever seen the hood bird, it was on a car with two tone interior...so i figured maybe dealers packaged them together...?

That is one nice T/A!!! If you check out the 86 Norwood pictures you can see a 86 T/A on the cradle with the exact color and screamin chicken combo. Does the car have the digital dash?
Re: How unusual is this...
There was an 86 TA with hood bird and 2 tone interior at the Pontiac Nats this past weekend. Car exterior was black. Low mileage original car. Won 1st place in 3rd gen TA class. I was parked next to it.

on behalf of my buddy...thanks for the compliments! it is one nice car. and no, no digital dash...and no cracks in the original spoiler either...its been taken very good care of and spent most its life in a garage...
Re: How unusual is this...
Not rare at all. What makes them seem uncommon is the population decline of the cars, a car surviving to this point without the decal being removed, the paint being redone, or the hood never being changed.

Re: How unusual is this...
My neighbor has the identical car. less the large hood bird and the wheels... I am not sure how unusual the DX1 is in 1986... The thing that I think makes it seem "rare" is the fact that it was only available on the TA and not all T/A's got it. The S/E and base it was NA, and there are more Base Firebirds out there, so out of the total cars made it was not common, but on the TA it was probably more common than it seems.
Also one way to tell if it was added after the fact is the Factory did not put the bird on the hood and the bird on the front facia on the same car, it was either one or the other. So if you ever find an 85-87 with both birds one has been added.
