The RPO sheet/sticker in my center console is peeling pretty badly from one side. Not ripped, just peeling. I dont really keep much of anything in there but I do have a few things (Insurance/registration card keeper, multitool, cassette to phone player)

Anyways has anyone come up with a good way to either “restore” their RPO codes stickers to put them back on or to cover them to keep them from being damaged?

 

I replaced the consoles and/or rear glove box panel in nearly all of my Firebirds. I have three or for SPIDs applied to waxed paper in the car's folders for safe keeping. A peely edge can probably be stuck back down with a careful application of contact adhesive or doublesticky tape.

 

I tried on one of my cars to use double sided extra sticky carpet tape... It didn't work too well... I have considered reproducing mine.

Thinking the one in my 91 Formula got stuck back down in the new console with spray adhesive, like 3m 08088. Had to put it back in the car for Kansas title inspection.

 

I keep mine in a folder in the desk.

 

Yikes. So what do they do if it's missing?

 

The story goes that Kansas used to be a popular state to "wash" a questionable car's history. Thus the state decided that any vehicle entering the state DMV system has to have an inspection by the local PD or State Troopers. The inspection is fairly innocuous, the secretary at the Police Station comes out, and verifies the VIN matches the papers, then she looks for the VIN on the door jamb decal, and if that's illegible they go looking for another VIN location.

Turned out my Formula's door jamb decal and VIN tag were enough. On my Malibu I had at the time, the door jamb decal was gone, or faded badly enough it couldn't be read. Of course in 1980 they didn't have SPIDs, so they told me to run up the street to the State Troopers to have them OK it. I'd yanked the 2bbl carb, and stuffed an RV cam in the 267 V8, and cleaned up the block and gave it a squirt of Chebby Orange, so I was able to point out the partial VIN on the engine block, and the trooper signed off on it.

I'd assume if they couldn't find another viable VIN number, I'd be living out the rest of my short miserable life in a pain amplifier©.

 

Couldn’t hurt to get a good photo of it.. I got good clear photos of all my factory decals in case I needed to replicate them..

I actually have referred to my SPID photo often for random info.. it’s good to have a copy on devices/cloud..

If mine was peeling or in danger I’d probably store that console cover and get a replacement for the car..

Drew that’s interesting about the title inspection.. geez.. never heard of that..
