THIRD GEN CUP HOLDERS MODIFICATION

We all hate it!!! Your driving to work...the drag strip..where ever, and where does your drink sit? Between your legs...or wrapped, and propped up in a shirt or jacket in your passenger seat..lol

WELL...i ran across this Tech Article on the site here. This guy built his own cup holders, and they look great!!! Like it came from the factory!!

Go to the MAIN PAGE, on the left hand side click on the "TECHNICAL ARTICLES" link. Then scroll down to the "BEAUTIFICATIONS" section. Its the 10th one down in that section i believe, called "CAMARO CUP HOLDERS 101".

Maybe someone has already posted a thread about this article, maybe not...but i had to share it with you guys, its a cool mod for sure that actually looks good, and comes in handy!!! So check it out, here is a pic from the article to give you an idea,

I myself wouldnt stick the Emblem on the cup holder, not really my style. But either way...super cool article!!!

Re: THIRD GEN CUP HOLDERS MODIFICATION

I put mine a little further back and love it. I recently swapped a T56 in so it is kind of a PITA, but still handy. I didn't like how the others only fit a soda can. Mine will fit a 20 oz bottle and pretty much any fast food cup.

I stored me loose change in there until I realized I always forgot about it, and when I remembered it, I couldn't get it out without fighting for it. So, now, I store my change in my pocket, nothing in the ashtray, and enforce my "Drink it before we ride" policy.

You obviously dont go boating very often do you? Go to boaters world or west marine and take your pic--size, color, plastic or aluminum. Every boat has cupholders just like those! You can also buy them on ebay or online.

Re: THIRD GEN CUP HOLDERS MODIFICATION

NICE..some good responses on the issue. So far i see some pros and cons

By replacing the ash tray and converting that space into the dual cup holder, you obviously have room for your drink and that of your passenger. BUT yes, it would get in the way of the CD player and you would only be able to hold can size drinks.

The cup holder behind the window switches crossed my mind once or twice as well. TMZIrocZ350's looks great, very clean modification. You would be able to store a drink bigger than a can, and it sits right where your arm is resting anyways..lol...and its not in the way of the CD player.
NOW your passenger would have no where to store their drink...BUT its not like they are having to drive the car..lol..so they could always shut up and just enjoy the ride..haha.

And then the "drink before you ride" policy is always a simple fix to...lol

i have always had mixed emotions about doing this mod, as i dont want to mess up my console.....but it does look stock (the one behind the window switches more so)

Thats a clean mod you did there!! I havent removed my center console yet, in the process of saving the money to replace some interior pieces and clean it all up a bit. So i have no idea what i would run into.
Did you simply just measure the diameter of the cup holder and cut the hole in place? Or did you have to break it down and do it out of the car?
Run into wires and such from the window switches?
I have only owned my Third Gen for about two months now..lol...so im still learning the car.

I kinda feel the same way. It would be nice to have a place for my drink..since i ALWAYS have a diet coke or a water in my hand, so part of me likes the idea. The other part of me doesnt want to mess my console up either, and just accept the fact that im going to have to hold my drink...lol

I think i will most likley go with the mod in the tech article. I can live with just a can. And as far as it getting in the way of the radio...a can isnt THAT tall, especially when inside the cup holder, the dual cup holders in the article are fairly deep if you look at them...so it cant get THAT much in the way of the radio.

Either way..lol..im not trying to make this a bigger issue than what it really is. Just thought it would be nice to have a spot that looks good and clean, to put your drink on a long commute to work or a car show or something.

i wonder if you can put a real cup holder in there and not a tupperware cup??? maybe a piece of PVC pipe???

IDK one up side to that, is to revert back to stock all you got to do is get another shifter plate

Re: THIRD GEN CUP HOLDERS MODIFICATION

Thanks for the compliments guys!! The cup holder itself is from Boaters World. It was aluminum and powder coated blue when I bought it. Just shot it with some gloss black out of a rattle can.

The install was very easy. I just found a center spot in the large area behind the switches. Then I got a 3" hole saw and made the hole. I didn't remove the console either, which was even nicer. Just be very careful not to go to deep or your doing some new wiring. Next I moved the wires and relays out of the way and plopped in the cupholder.

As far as the passenger's, they can hold their own drinks lol.

Re: THIRD GEN CUP HOLDERS MODIFICATION

to the original poster, you can do the tech article one but i tried every day from sunday and couldnt fit it in, i used PVC for the base of my cupholer btw so that will work, but if you have an auto the ridge piece that slides under the shifter gets in the way and i have nos (as you can see no cd player lol) so there is some wires under my cupholder there tha prevented me from making two anyway and the beer wasnt just an example lol car's taillights are off so i can drink and drive bc it'll only go down the driveway

Re: THIRD GEN CUP HOLDERS MODIFICATION

i think i'd rather try to fab up the ash tray one than swap a 4th gen console, i'm a sucker for keeping stuff original,
i plan to give it a try later on this year, we'll see i guess
