Re: Overhead Console

You'll need the console, the support bracket, the 4 screws/bushing things that thread into the roof and cut some holes in your headliner.

Support bracket? You'll need the correct overhead (the coupe and t-top versions are slightly different), the mounting screws, and a snippet of wiring. I caution against purchasing an incomplete console: the individual pieces, especially the flash light, are difficult and sometimes expensive to come by. The following link should provide some insight:

Pulling the headliner is unnecessary. Check the following for the how-to (which is included the link above):

I was in the same boat 11,085 posts ago; then I discovered that many modifications simply aren't rocket science. This you can do.

Wow. Never knew I needed the bracket when I bought my hard top roof console new from the dealer ages ago. Anyone know where I can get one or anyone have one laying around?

No such thing. The console is held in place by six screws, four in the body and two under the dome light cover.

Re: Overhead Console

The damned thing is in the pic I posted....no such thing...RIGHT!!! It helps the headliner conform to the contour of the console so it fits right. Then again I must have photoshopped it into that picture

Re: Overhead Console

Well mine has been in place without the "clip looking thing". The only thing I can think of the clip being needed is because of the crappy stock headliner sagging from the wire that powers the auto dim mirror. I am sure those with the newer plastic type headliners won't need that clip. Guess I answered my own question. Would be interesting to see how many hardtop roof console equiped cars can chime in to end this debate. Almost funny like the "mystery light under the hvac" thread when a lot of us didn't know about that light.

Re: Overhead Console

No one is here to upset anyone. It is just a part that a lot of Camaro owners are not aware of and others here on the board have their opinions and which they are entitled to them. Unfortunately, sometimes some of us, including me, have taken things to heart and in the wrong context.

Yes, the bracket is clearly visible, but also, there were not a lot of Camaro's that came with roof consoles, and were added afterwards like mine. Your's I am sure is factory stock and that bracket was in there. I wanted to know how many other non-t-top owners with the factory installed roof console have that same bracket or your's could be a one off as GM has done strange additions and deletions during a model production run.

I meant no offense. However, I've removed and installed and sold many overheads of both types. Frankly, I have no idea of what you're talking about, Twin. The coupe version has an extra piece (foam and cardboard), one that the t-top version doesn't have, but I certainly wouldn't call it a bracket and it certainly doesn't help support the console in any fashion. That piece can be seen in post #1 of the following link:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...d-console.html

At any rate, to the OP and others, good luck.

Re: Overhead Console

I never said it holds up the console, it's for the headliner. Bracket schmacket... whatever. The piece does not exist.

Yes (My pic, BTW). It's the headliner reinforcement piece for the coupe version of the overhead (It fits between the headliner and roof. In the pic you can actually see the indentation of where the ground screw was located). I suggest that most members who swap in an overhead have no idea that this part exists and as a consequence never install it. I haven't heard of anyone experiencing problems without it, but given the choice, I'd swap it in.

Terminology elbowed out of the way, Twin and I were talking about the same piece.

Yup your pic. Sorry, should have asked first. If I come across that part, i'll throw it on. But I just can't believe how he got bent out of shape. We all mean well.

The screws are a bit special as you can see in the following pic. If you're interested, I still have them for sale:

Ok hiding by the pic those are not all of them I know I need 6 so I don't know if I use the two already in the car or what. Also I can just get screws and washers and make them work.

Check post #19 of the following link for a more specific pic: the ground screw, the two dome light screws, and the four oddballs. From the pic you should be able to determine whether you can make something to work or not.

If it helps, here's a direct link to post #19. Link

You would probably need some metal tubing and washers to have something similar. IIRC, the screws provide a place for the console to slide in place.

Re: Overhead Console

Its the four screws for the roof that you want.Because they have a bushing that the console secures to.
The two in the dome light are just sheet metal screws.Nothing special about those.

Re: Overhead Console

After reading this post and looking at all the pics it appears that I have installed a t-top over-head console in a non t-top car. My bad! Could explain why I had to do a little fabricating and head scratching to get it to fit. The hardest paart was cutting the hole in my new head-liner. Except for the sagging elastic in the pocket it looks great. As far as some one saying that a part doesn't exist, when I went to my Chevy dealer for a dome light lens for the console, the parts guy told me that 3rd gens never came with an overhead console. He proved his point by asking his buddy behind the counter who said "nope, they never did".

Re: Overhead Console

I successfully added a standard overhead console (non t-top) to my '91 T/A at the same time I redid the headliner. I got the fabric at Hancock Fabrics (it is the foam backed fabric), and used the 3M General Spray Adhesive to adhere it to the original headliner board (after cleaning off all the old foam). After about 3 years, it is still looking great, and I love the look of the overhead console!

Those guys are NUTS!!! The lens for the roof console has been discontinued btw. And as far as the roof console goes, someone should show them this site and all brochures that demonstrate the console as an option or part of an option package. I believe the console became available in 1984 and 1987 was the last year for it. Both Firebirds and Camaros had them. Man, some of these parts people are something else.
