Auxillary plug

Hi, so I really need help. I once saw somewhere a picture of someone who had a cigarette lighter on the passenger side. It was located towards the center console. And I was wondering if anyone could help me out by telling me how to wire one. I have a 1986 Iroc-z with a 305tpi. I'm young and don't really know much and would like all the help I can get. Thanks.

Welcome to TGO, chevy. Might be easier to purchase the 'adapter' that fits into the lighter, but has two outlets. Use it when you need it, remove it when you don't.

Re: Auxillary plug

Well I have one of those. But the wires just get in the way. That is my reason for trying to add a second cigarette plug. I just bought this one two days ago to plug in into the plug im asking for help on.

Re: Auxillary plug

In the fuse block, there will be several empty slots that are single slots (a fuse won't go into them b/c a fuse has two prongs). They are labelled with little arrows pointing to them. One will have BAT, one will have IGN, one will have LPS, one will have RADIO.

BAT = 12v+ all the time, regardless of the key
IGN = 12v+ whenever the key is turned to ON
LPS = 12v+ whenever the lights are turned on
RADIO = 12v+ whenever the key is either a) ON, or b) when at ACC setting

They accept a standard 1/4 inch male spade terminal.

So - cut the plug off your thingy there, and crimp a standard 1/4inch male spade terminal on the pos wire, and insert either into the IGN slot or the BAT slot (whichever you prefer - just remember BAT is power always, and whatever you have plugged in will draw current regardless of the key). Crimp a round connector on the neg wire, and ground it to a dash screw that goes into metal.

You might have to use butt connectors to add wire to increase the length so that you can tuck your wires away nicely under the dash.

Now, with this info, you can add all kinds of cool gadgets, extra interior lighting, radio accessories, etc.

Re: Auxillary plug

Camaronewbie is right if you are wanting to hardwire your adapter in or any cigarette lighter type plug in accessory. If using just some sort of auxilliary plug without any wires there will generally be a center terminal at the bottom that is the positive to go to the fuse box as indicated and a side terminal that is for the ground. As stated wire to a screw or small bolt going into metal for the ground. Then mount the aux plug whereever you want it. Just remember that screw holes will be left if removed so try to plan accordingly.

Re: Auxillary plug

So if I hook it up in the IGN slot I won't need a fuse or anything? I just don't want to blow a fuse or fry something. But thanks a lot you guys for all the information.

Re: Auxillary plug

I would put a fuse in inline to be safe. The fuse should blow before any wiring would be damaged due to overloading or a short. I always put a fuse inline for anything.

Re: Auxillary plug

Sure, go for it.

Sorry - should have mentioned a fuse as well - yes I'd use an inline fuse. I use a fuse for most everything, thus I don't think of mentioning it - to me a fuse is always a given.

I couldn't have said that any better. I feel the same using a fuse is automatic. I have only one thing in my truck that isn't fused, Winch wiring, I can get one, I may have to think outside the box, but did not feel like finding a 350-400 amp fuse. Everything else is fused, amp wiring, special radio power, driving lights, aux rear lighting, everything.
(My stereo requires the use of a 10 gauge wire for power due to the power output. It says in the manual that hooking it up to stock wiring may melt that wiring. But I like it so.)
