The center part is a button. Push it and the hazards (basically your turn signals) will come on. You pull the outer part to turn them off.

^^ this.I have no idea wtf was in their mind when they designed that...probably forgot to add hazards and had to "engineer" it after they car was done...there's no other explanation for that.

good side for that is that makes it hard for people to use hazards for all stupid reasons.

Re: Strange wheel plug

Yep that is the hazards. GM has done the same type of button/switch for over 30 years IIRC used on most if not all cars/trucks.

You will find the same button on Monte carlo, regals, cutlass, S10, C10, camaro, firebird, just to name a few.

Push center in, use the outer plastic ring to pull out to turn hazards off

Yeah. Sometimes GM really has very weird ideas, like this

Why putting the indicator led on a different block !?!?!? In fact, later they fixed this thing

well that has a logic. Its because during the night you need a second light to show you when the lights are on.The buttons have a backround light for nighttime .

Re: Strange wheel plug

My favorite "crazy switch" of all time was the old Hi-Beam headlight switch mounted on the floor-board. You literally had to feel around for that sucker with your foot at night to turn on the hi beams...lol Our cars never got them, even in the early years, but I had plenty of GM cars and others for that matter, that did.

Re: Strange wheel plug

I love the floor dimmer switch! In fact I have converted my '88 camaro and our '87 burb to floor dimmers.

I will too if my switch goes out. Adds just a little more nostalgia to it I bet...lol
