speedometer needle removal

Hi, I have my cluster out and want to remove the speedo gauge and needle in my 85 z28.
I have plastic off and just removed the 2 little black screws that hold the speedometer...only the needle is left,,, how do I remove it without breaking it?
Thank you in advance,

Re: speedometer needle removal

It just prys off. You need to use even pressure on both sides of needle base. I always use a dinner fork to pop of gauge needles. If the tines are too close together on your fork just cut one off of it.

I use to get the oddest looks and questions from buddies when they saw a dinner fork in my tool chest lol.

After nearly 30 years, the plastic will be very brittle. I'd guess there a very good chance you'll break it. Moreover, the idea of correctly calibrating the needle on the shaft so that it reads correctly seems fussy. May I ask what your goal is?

I want to swap my 85mph gauge for a 145 mph gauge in my cluster. I got the 145 gauge from a junk yard. All I wanted was to swap the black steel part and re install my actual speedo cluster since all the gauges work except the temp gauge which is all the way up.
I have bought 2 used 145 mph complete clusters on ebay. They are worse than my cluster. Most gauges were not working. Junk. So I figured this way was the easiest way to have the 145 mph speedo. Looks better than 85mph!

To remove the needle without breaking it,...... Here's a thread with pics:

You Can NOT simply change the face/bezel from an 85mph to a 145mph Speedo and "build" a 145 speedometer. The Speedo head itself is calibrated to the speed rated on the original face/bezel. By swapping just the face/bezel,.... you now have a 85 speedo head that displays the wrong speed on a 145 speedo face.

Do yourself a favor and simply install the entire/complete 145 speedo head into your original cluster.

If you consider fixing the odometer, which will likely be broken, check out the following link:

you are right..but the speedo gear on the 145mph is damaged...i cant use the whole bezel...the speed will be off like you mentioned if i only change the face ,,but the way i drive (old man) and no way my car will hit 145 mph..i don't mind if it's off a bit!!

Re: speedometer needle removal

It won't be off a bit. It will be off a considerable amount. Your 85mph speedo will have the needle at ~3 o'clock for 70mph and that same location is ~120mph on the 145 speedo.
