Reversal switch or pull down motor

My pull down motor won´t close the hatch. Sometimes it works but sometimes not. If I tap the motor housing it does goes down. But how can I tell if it is the motor or the switch? The are really close to each other. If I compare to my friends car my motor is slower and is louder. It also slows down just before the reversal swith clicks. Any ideas?

Clean out all the dirty old dried up grease. Lube with fresh grease, see if it makes a difference.

Last one I had apart, the grease was the same consistency as an old crayon. Obviously a solid isn't a great lubricant.

Will try that

I also read that worn down motor brushes might cause similar problems. Is that a possibility?

The problem only occurs when I close the hatch. Never when I open it.

How do I measure motor voltage? Wire colors?

Yes, clean out ALL that old, hard, waxy lube. Re-lube with white lithium or something known to be plastic compatible.

When I did mine, I pulled the motor cover off to lube the armature bushings. There was no abnormal brush wear.

Thanks! I will do that and also check the motor brushes, windings and collector. Good to know that it is possible to open up the motor

It´s all working for now. Hope it stays that way.

Inside the motor there is a switch that I presume are temperature controlled. by a bimetal. Is that to protect the motor and how does it work?

As I recall, there was no such thing inside my motor.

Re: Reversal switch or pull down motor

It was located under the brushes. Since I can get the pull down to start working by tapping the motor I figure that the problem might be this switch or the reversing switch.
But right now everything works. The motor was in good shape by the way
