A-Pillar clips and installation (hardtop)
A-Pillar clips and installation (hardtop)
I don't have good experiences with A-Pillar adjustments (broken brackets, clips etc.)
A few days ago I installed a new headliner on my hardtop GTA. On this occasion, I renewed the wheaterstrips and clips on the A-Pillar.
Now I have no idea how to install these "christmas tree" clips in this square holes. How does this works?
Thank you

That's the wrong clip. You need these, https://www.hawksmotorsports.com/82-...-reproduction/

The Christmas tree style clips are for the very front of the pillar, to the side of the windshield. The clips at the top use these, which are a pain to get out without breaking.

Not on my '89 hard top. Every clip is the same, slots in the body to match.
I think T-top cars have a mix.

Interesting. My hardtop 89 has slots, but the front two were the twist in Christmas tree style. I wonder if they'd been swapped out before, then. It was the same on both sides.
Re: A-Pillar clips and installation (hardtop)
The upper clips near the headliner are this style:
https://www.hawksmotorsports.com/82-...-reproduction/
I got these from hawks.
But in the front oft the A-Pillar, there are on my cars "christmas tree" clips. One is left in the A-Pillar (see picture above).
There are:
3x these clips on the hardtop near the headliner: https://www.hawksmotorsports.com/82-...-reproduction/
2x "christmas tree" clips near the windshield
The upper clips near the headliner are easy to install. But the "christmas tree" clips near the windshield doesen't work with the square holes. I'm not bringing these in.

You may have the wrong christmas trees. The very top should only be about 3/4 of the round, the idea is you twist them in.

Re: A-Pillar clips and installation (hardtop)
It's not you, brother. I just did mine last week with the kit that you posted and it has 10 clips, enough to do 2 A-pillars. The 3 clips at the top of the windshield for the headliner have a different base (no slot), so they will not work on the A-pillar. My 84 had the "christmas tree" style at the lower locations, but the 87 I recent took some parts off of had the clips in all 5 locations, so you are all right. For what it's worth, the clips are much easier to install.

I was wondering about that when I put the link up. I wonder if it's a case of 'grab whatever's available' while they were doing assembly.

The x-mas tree clips are what is used on my 91 t-top car, I think I was able to source some replacements at one of the local auto parts stores, AZ or Advanced when I was replacing the weather stripping filler for the A pillar covers.

Re: A-Pillar clips and installation (hardtop)
I had the wrong "christmas tree" clips. The top should only be about 3/4 of the round. They are different as the door "christmas tree" clips. Here the wrong one:

These are the correct two "christmas tree" clips in the front of the A-Pillar near the windshield:

I installed the correct three clips near the headliner (reproduction from Hawks):

New weatherstrip:

From Germany; but with luck you can get this in different countries?

Removing the old clips is a pain - take care of the scratches:

Doing the job with success - a pleasure for the car and me:
