Firebird T-handle Shifter Handle Removal

We got past that tricky round trim cover on the seat belt buckle...(thank you to those who replied in the thread below and in my build thread)...

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...ner-cover.html

....and now the next stumbling block. The clip that holds my shifter handle on seems to be particularly deeply embedded into the shifter handle material where it passes over the shaft of the shifter. I've tried all I can think of, and am getting down to some slightly, and ultimately more, destructive methods to get that t-handle off. Don't want to ruin the original leather covered handle, but it's go to come off for the project to progress.

If anyone has any thought on how to defeat this clip, I'm all ears. Detailed photos of what I'm fighting are located HERE.

It should come straight out. Maybe spray some silicon spray and let it sit for awhile. Grip it with some thing strong (vice grips) and pull straight out. wrap tape around it before attempting? good luck!!

Small flathead screwdriver always does the trick for me

Re: Firebird T-handle Shifter Handle Removal

Thanks guys. Unfortunately the clip is jammed in (I believe) beyond the design depth. There is no gap to get a screwdriver or pick into.

I mentioned in one of my last posts in the linked thread above that I was down to trying to drill a small hole above the clip to create the space to get a pick in behind the clip. TTOP350 suggested a heated screwdriver to burn away a bit of the handle to create the space, and I think that will be neater than drilling. I'll report back on how this works.

Any Progress yet Dave?I'm wondering if something other than the clip was used to fasten the handle
Me ,I would just do my best digging that sucker out.

Re: Firebird T-handle Shifter Handle Removal

Hey Franny...not yet. Year end work schedule and Holiday prep kept me out of the shop last week. We also lost a family member this past week, so I just wasn't in the mood to horse with it.

Spent today hanging out with my son at the range, then finished my Christmas shopping.

I'll hit the Hobo Freight store tomorrow and pick up a cheap screwdriver I can destroy by heating it. Then I'll hang out in the shop to catch the Lions game and work on the T/A.

Re: Firebird T-handle Shifter Handle Removal

just wanted to support a fellow Lions fan. i grew up near Buffalo NY but Barry Sanders made me a fan in middle school and i've stuck with them ever since. it feels like i'm everyone's token Lion fan around here. LOL
it's been a long time coming to get where they are now and i love the culture Dan Campbell established. here's hoping they get the #1 seed so the rest allows them to get some injured players back.

I got mine out with a set of small pic’s from either Matco or Mac tools. Picture below of similar set from Home Depot.
