You have to get the LS1 carb intake and computer to run all of the timing and spark control. I think Edelbrock makes it.

I've seen a couple of magazine articles on it. Interestingly neither made as much power with the carb as it did with FI.

This is true, the tuning capabilities of the carb just can't keep up with FI tuning where you can tune each cylinder individually, plus you lose the fuel milage as well

Basically, yes.
If you want to have the most out of an LS1, it needs to stay FI with all the little computer gadgets intact.

ls1 carbed here. running great.
runs stronger than any fuel injection ls1 ive been up against.
sure the gas milage isnt there, but im about going fast.
i get 13 in the summer beating on it, 18mpg in the winter if i baby it.
8" race converter and a th350.
cant complain.
good luck.

You still have a computer even with the carb setup. It has to have one to run the ignition using all of the sensors on the motor.
I know of a guy running an LS1 FI setup, that's running 6.0's in the 1/8th setup with a single turbo on the car, all computer controlled. Quite a few guys around here running low 7's and getting 26+ MPG with a FI setup as well and a couple of them are actually daily drivers.

It would look like this

Using this

which uses these to control the timing curves

The drawback to going with this setup vs a FI setup is using the LS1 computer you can tune the spark and fuel for each individual cylinder to get the most HP out of it which yields a better running car, and the best economy you can get. As I stated, I know of a bunch of guys running in the low 7's using a FI setup with just a cam swap and no work done on the heads.
And to be honest, stock for stock, cost vs HP gains it really isn't worth it.

Re: LS1 Carb
You don't need a special tranny. I think you might just need a crank spacer depending on what trans and what year motor. Or you could just get a converter built to fit LS1 to Gen1 type trans. I've got a 2004 6.0 hooked to a TH350(using crank spacer and regular TH350 converter).
