Said goodbye to my firstborn

Had to make the tough decision to reduce the size of the herd at the house.

The '57 I'll never sell. The '95 Silverado 3500HD 6.5 TD has its utility. My wife needs a good car to get around in ('08 Grand Prix GXP - hey, it's an LS, at least). Couldn't ask my son to sell his '01 S10 Blazer (with LS swap) or he'd constantly be borrowing one of mine.

As I was leaving the track after winning the last race of the season last October in my '82 Berlinetta LS1/4L60E, I decided the one that would make the most sense to part with would be the '82 Berlinetta LS1/T56. I figured it was the one someone else would get the most enjoyment out of, was the best looking, and in the best shape. It was my LS guinea pig, the one I cut my LS teeth on, and the one on which I've tried the most different things. Driving it from the Denver area 70 miles to deliver it in Colorado Springs, it hummed along happily at 2300 RPM and 75 MPH, sipping politely from it's belly full of premium as we went.

I'm glad it's going to someone who's happy to have it, who's enthusiastic about the hobby, and who is currently making the personal sacrifice of serving our country and us all.

Now I can concentrate on getting what I still have up to form.

Well, it is just one of many. At least you did not wreck it or have it stolen. Best way to part with a car.

No argument there.

Funny how you get attached, though. I had it 4-1/2 years. Probably drove it 6 months out of that.

But, I will have had the other Berlinetta for 14 years next month. Longest I've had any vehicle except the '57.

I hope you at least told the new owner to post up on TGO!

Maybe he'll give it a paint job too...haha.

The buyer is a TGO member.

This is the one with the good paint. I kept Ugly Betty.

Dang, economy must be better than I thought. Didn't see one selling for more than 6k. That's awesome but being a TGO member I'm sure helped a touch. Sound like a really really good home!

Re: Said goodbye to my firstborn

Hopefully the buyer can post now and again with the car, very hard to let them go.

8k seems very reasonable for a ls1 6speed car, atleast around here. 100 percent stock TPI cars with good paint bring 5-6.

Re: Said goodbye to my firstborn

its always better when they don't stay in the same town either. when i sold my restored 1979 k10(that i learned to drive with and my dad bought new) to some punk kid, i had the displeasure of watching him destroy all of my hard work. but i had to make a decision, and at that time it was the k10 or the z/28.

glad it went to a good home!

Wow time flies man.... seems like yesterday we were putting that thing together in here. Ha... Glad it went to a good home and another board member though. Thats cool

Sooner or later, we part with everything and as mentioned above, it went in the best way possible. To a happy owner and cash in pocket. Good price, good deal, hope the dude enjoys it as much as you did.

Re: Said goodbye to my firstborn

I am glad i ran across this post

I am the one that bought the camaro and i could not be more pleased! Hopefully i can keep it up to five7kids's standards

I would say he was very helpful and flexible with the sale due the fact that i am currently deployed and there were many variables to the sale

But I could not be happier that i made the purchase. If all goes well the car should be there when I get off the plane back in the United States... fingers crossed!

i will be sure to keep you all updated with the car as i begin to work on it. I have many things planned so hopefully you, especially five7kid, will be happy with my plans.

Thanks again for everything and like i have said a million times... I am very excited. This was a deal i could not pass up!

The price was better than what i would have to spend to get what he has done to it

Also the fact that i am in the Marines and get a paycheck every two weeks helps out a lot. I don't feel the full force of the crappy economy most of the time

Congrats man! Yeah a 6 spd LS swapped third gen is one HELL of a wicked platform so you've chosen wisely there. The potential is through the roof for what you can do performance wise so keep your head down over there and enjoy the good times with it when you get back.

Thats the most pleasurable part as far as im concerned. Dreaming up the build, buying up parts, and putting all together. That first start up man.... good times. In fact seems to me I recall the first start up post of this very car. Im sure five7 was on cloud nine that day haha.

Easiest way to decide what to do is figure out how much play dough you have to work with, then set out your goals whether they be appearance mods like paint, wheels, interior etc. Or go fast mods in which case you REALLY need to plan carefully and choose well matched components to get the most out of them.

A couple of tips. If your staying naturally aspirated spend as much money as you can on the heads FIRST, then worry about matching everything else up. If your gonna spray it then be sure to enlist the best tuner possible or you might meet an earlier than later rebuild date. If your going full monty and shoot for boost? You realllllllllly need to match up parts well to make everything jive and again the tuner is going to be KEY to success.

Have fun man

Re: Said goodbye to my firstborn

I was thinking about a turbo build but at this point i will probably lean more towards a NA build.

My goals are around 450rwhp but we will see. I plan on no spray though. My money will go towards the engine first then appearance second. (plan to paint it yellow with two black stripes) We shall see about thatthough

Also i apologize if i am hijacking your thread five7

Re: Said goodbye to my firstborn

450 na will be a chore with stock cubes but a cake walk with something over 400cid.

420ish on stock cubes is doable but ive grown less and less concerned with peak numbers these days as they can be misleading somewhat. TFS or AFR heads with a 235ish cam, LS6 or FAST 92 and a good tune and you'd have one mean machine. If your aiming for street mostly and occasional track the TSP 228R or old school TR224 both on 112 will ROCK!!!

Of course if your after all out drag get the T-Rex and above mentioned heads and ltfo

I remember selling my 57 about 7 year ago. it had 70K original documented on the clock but was a 210 4 door post, surf green with matching interior. 283 with PG all bone stock.

well i will definitely look into all of that. Obviously i am looking more for times than i am Hp. But i dont plan on making it a drag car. I would like to make it a fast yet streetable car. I will look into your suggestions and see what it will run me

Re: Said goodbye to my firstborn

It always hurts when you have to sell a car you have owned and worked on for many years. I am going through it right now with my 91z28. I am parting it out due to too much rot. I tried selling it outright for $5500 and got no bites. So far, after parting about 75% of it, I have made over 9K. I still have a $10k engine to dress up and sell too. I owned the car for 13 years and its been through a lot and it kills me to take it apart but hopefully I can settle into a C5 Z06 soon.

BTW, twizle2, SEMPER FI brother. Are you active or reserve? Shoot me a PM.

Re: Said goodbye to my firstborn

selling a car is hard, but it eases the pain a bit when you sell it to fund your other projects. Watching my Corvette drive off with the new owner behind the wheel was super hard, but I did it to pay for the transmission upgrade in the IROC. Of course, that was 2+ years ago, and the money is still sitting in my safe because the IROC is still sitting half torn apart with no progress.
