Cam Question in 5.3l
I purchased a 5.3l block for my swap into an 82 camaro and the guy "threw" in a ls1 cam for free. My question is how will this cam work in 5.3l and is it worth putting in or getting a custom grind. I've looked up the part and grind # to no avail. I know a little bit about cams but not that much and I find it weird the intake and exhaust are the same? and what kind of hp gains could I expect over a stock cam or another custom grind?
Specs: part# 54-000-11 grind#: 13117r/13117r
gross valve lift: I-.598 E-.598
Duration @ .006 Tappet lift 275 275
duration @ .050 I- 226 E-226
lobe lift I-.3520 E-same
Lobe separation 113.0

Cam should be one of the last components u buy for an engine build .. Ur cam needs to match ur heads, intake, compression etc.

Re: Cam Question in 5.3l
I didn't buy it...it was given to me with the motor. And I do realize this the motor is going to be completely stock short block and heads. Intake will be ls1(ls6 if I can find one for cheap enough) and down the road probably this summer have a turbo turning low boost and a cam I was wondering if this one I had would work. Also curious if its a big cam or a small cam and how streetable it would be.

Re: Cam Question in 5.3l
Not a great choice at all for a boosted motor
Sure it will still make power but-
If it were me Id use the truck intake if theres room youll get more torque out of that 5.3. They flow pretty darn well plus they cost as much as dirt

Re: Cam Question in 5.3l
For a totally stock setup, that cam is a small bump above the tiny truck cam. If its free, rock it. If you're turbo'ing later, pick a cam to match at that time

Hmm ok yeah so I'll probably go get a custom grind then and the issue is I'm pretty sure there won't be room with the intake as its really tall. Would there be any noticeable hp gains from this cam?

Re: Cam Question in 5.3l
best bet to find any gains with a stock LS1 cam in a stock 5.3 is to check on LS1Tech and even youtube for any dyno vids. Its not alot but its better than the 5.3 cam if your not going to do anything else to the engine.
