Is this ls1 block trash?

Found this block a while back on cl for cheap. I didn’t really need it but thought I’d scoop it up in case I wanted to use it later down the road. When I looked I saw the marks in the cylinder but I wasn’t concerned because I would have it bored out. As I was leaving the guy mentioned that this block was a 383 build he had done for his car. Well about half way home it hit me that there may not be enough cylinder left to bore.

The pic makes it look worse than it is but it’s still bad enough you can feel it. I’m sure I could have it sleeved but I think I’ll be it more $$ than I’d want to be. At this point I’m just wondering if I could even sell it for a few buck or is it worthless? I know ls1s are desirable but are they desirable enough for someone to buy something like this?

Lines in the bore like that are normal. However, if you can feel and catch them with your finger nail than I doubt you could save it. If if was stock 346 than you might get away with the little bit of overbore that the stock liners allow. I would scrap. Have a shop inspect the thickness of the liners, or just take it to the scraper for some coin. You can buy a sleeved block from texas speed for less than re-sleeving that block.

Re: Is this ls1 block trash?

What year is the block? I ask because the tolerances changed for what could be removed from the cylinder wall between the early and late blocks. At most it was only .010 on the later blocks, and .005 -.007 on the 97/98 blocks you could remove. So if they only changed the rotating assembly to do the 383 and didnt do anything to the cylinders then you might be able to save it. But I agree that sleeving it would be a good chunk of change.

I’m not sure what year it is. 3.9xx I believe was the bore size he said.

Ah, ok. than yeah no more left lol. Stock is something along the lines of 3.89. And I agree with Shifty, you can get one already done from texas speed for a better deal.

If you can feel it, it won't seal. It'll have blowby from Hell. Probably why it was taken out of the car in the first place.

It probably can't be bored out any more than it already is; and if you can feel it, even if it hadn't already been bored, it might be too deep to clean up.

Sounds like you just paid somebody for the privilege of taking out their trash for them. See "Tom Sawyer" and the fence whitewashing episode.

I believe the best thing you could make out of it, would be a run to the scrap metal place.
