Unexplained options

Hi guys

Just me AGAIN an I reading things wrong or just not understanding I just bought a 1989 Iroc Convert l98 the owner claimed the car was modified by the original dealer and had the auto swapped out for a ZF6 the option list I pulled from GM confirms this but as I said I may just be confused I have 4 wheel disc brakes and dual cat exhaust which I thought were options but from the RPO codes none show either as add ons were these 2 items standard. Also I read that the front and back original rims had different off sets as the wheels are off a GTA I am thinking of buying a set of the American Racing chrome Iroc wheels but if the offsets are different does American Racing offer the proper off sets or should I find a set of OME ones I don't care as I am not trying to keep it orginal as I may swap the engine I just did all the brakes and susp and the new top goes on Wednesday then off to the tin knockers for body and paint.

Re: Unexplained options

The rpo codes are printed upon the factory build so they would not reflect any changes after. the disc should be j65

Re: Unexplained options

No J65 says J50 so this story about the dealer moding the car for a local raceways pace car might be true because the parts are all GM including the dual cats wonder hummmm

Re: Unexplained options

that's what I thought LOL I always wanted a 3rd gen vert took me a year to find one I could afford and wasn't a POS this one needs paint but has no rust or dings interior needs some tlc they were asking 5500.00 but I got it for 1500 new roof is costing me 1500.00 and all the mech work I only spent 1200.00 on the body and paint I traded my 1968 Bonniville convert for I only had 1300.00 in it so I figure I will have about 5500 to 6000 in it she has 137000 km

Re: Unexplained options

The ZF6 spd requires modification of the transmission tunnel to install it. It also requires a custom center console (see the firehawk modifications).

I think this is more likely that you have a 5.0L 5spd car that might have had a L98 swapped in if its been modified at all. But more than likely its a factory stock LB9/5spd.

What is the 8th digit of the VIN #? If its a 8 its an L98, if its F its an LB9.

S = 173 ci V6 LB8 (1987-1989)
T = 191 ci V6 LH0 (1990-1992)
F = 305 ci V8 LB9 (1987-1992)
H = 305 ci V8 LG4 (1987)
E = 305 ci V8 L03 (1988-1992)
8 = 350 ci V8 B2L/L98 (1987-1992)
7 = 231 ci V6 SFI Turbo (1989)

8th didget is an F option code from the build sheet is LB9 and MX0 trans it is a 6 speed for sure I have driven it and it has a dextron 2 lable on it and a borg warner build tag centre console is from a manual trans car could be modified I would not know the RPO sticker in the console is from a 1988 mm5 car

Re: Unexplained options

got any pics of this beast? id love to see a zf6 third gen, HOWEVER, i think you actually have a t56 if anything. i can tell you from experience, the t56 takes dexron II where as the zf6 came originally with 5w30 oil in it (i know, weird right?) and also borg warner makes the t56 where as the zf6 is made in germany (i forget the manufacturers name). now then, if it is a t56 this puts some holes in the dealer options theory as the t56 wasnt out until 93. do you have a black or blue tag anywhere on your trans? all zf6s have either a black or blue tag on them, depending on when they were made. anywho, theres just my 20 cents

Re: Unexplained options

OK I must have been thinking too much it can't be a ZF6 it has a borg warner plate attached to it and is a 6 speed so it has to be a t56 as you said I thought the t56 was a 5 speed everyone kept telling me it had to be a zf6 to be a six speed and as ZF builds the ZF6 there would not be a borg warner plate attached LOL now that we know I have a t56 what engines can be used do I have to sitck to an LT or can I get an LS bolted up to the t56
