disapointing times

ok, heres the deal, i went to LACR today for the first time ever and ran my car 4 times. I have a new 305 with auto trans and my only mods are exhaust and open element.

heres my times
17.649 2.553
17.236 2.420
17.194 2.437
17.114 2.428

Is this normal for a new 305 with auto?
Or do i need a tune up?
I was kinda pissed cause i was hoping for at least mid 16's, and I couldnt beat anything

Another case of the dreaded bog, where there is not enough power to spin the tires and the car takes forever to get into the RPM range. Try gears to help the 60' and the time should drop drastically. To give you an idea of how much the 60' affects a car (driving also helped a little):

Run 1:
60'...2.289
1/4...14.494
mph..97.78

Run 2:
60'...2.249
1/4...14.271
mph..98.79

With a .04 drop in 60' I picked up .2 in the 1/4. 60' can make or break a run!

stock i usually get a 2.0xx 60 foot and now hopefully going to hit 1.8's.

You should look into some 3.73's. Also, who did your motor install? I am just curious what the timing is at. Also, what were your MPH's.

my mph was between 77.9 and 78.4 every run. and i dont know what my timing is at, maybe i should look into that?

Yea i was pissed after these runs seeing as my engine is brand new with only 3000 miles

do you guys think if i get a tune-up and make sure my timing is right that i can make it to the 16's?

Your mph seems way low too. I think you have some other problems besides just your 60.

If your timing is off it will screw everything up. I would hope that is what it is.

I believe your hypertech chip brings more timing in already, so advancing it even more is causing it to detonate because the timing is so advanced.

i run 16.003 at 83mph with a 2.3 60ft time, my mods are in the sig. and i wasnt gettin any traction. and no tuning of the car (ran kinda on the rich side that day )

did u get ur motor rebuilt or was it a crate motor from like autozone or someone? maybe they gave u a wrong motor, its not like those places havent screwed up. i know some people have asked for 350's and ended up with 327's.

my engine was remanufactured at a&f auto, and im sure its a 305. well im going to buy spark plug wires now and once i install them ill see if there is a difference. oh yea, when the wire comes a little loose my car idles from 500-1000 and it is real rough, hopefully the wires solve the problem

not here to judge you but if my 305 would have gone bad , i would of just put a real 350 in there, then you wouldn't have to worry about 17, 16 , 15 second runs, i to have a 305 tpi and for what i can say 15.9 is slow , so i can imnagine 17

but its all what you want

something is wrong

When I first bought my 88T/A with a 305 auto it ran a 16.5 and onr of the spark plug wires was melted all the way through(so only 7 cly were firing) so something is definitly wrong there..

I heard the elevation is really high at LACR,there is a conversion
factor they use to convert to sealevel.I think that could be some
of your problem.

thats no joke. i bought my gta confident it had a 350 in it. the vin, the rpo codes, everything seemed to match up. had to pull the engine right away though cause it needed a rebuild. turns out someone snuck in a 305 in a previous rebuild. not too bid of a deal though, it did have a tpi w/ all 350 components, even had an l98 cam. although i didnt use it, it was there if i needed it.

and yes, there is a conversion for the altitude at LACR, but i dont think it is enough to make up for what you are losing. good luck.

jacob

p.s. if anyone wants the L98 cam, let me know. its just taking up space so....

i ran a best 16.3 @ 81 mph with a 2.3 60 foot on my first time out to the tracks. Those times were with a broken tranny mount, balded 245's, 0 degrees of timing, and a fuel pump going bad

When I had my 1989 RS (305TBI auto w/160K miles) it ran 15.30 in a quarter mile
with a G-Tech in a 80 degree weather. Never touched the engine. The minor mods were:
• 3.42 Posi-traction disc rear end swap
• March Underdrive Pulleys
• Hypertech Thermomaster Stage II chip
• 160 stat
• 1/2" TBI spacer and 1/8" injector spacer
• Corvette Servo
• Timing at 6 degree

SOLD TO A BUDDY that's dropping an LT1 engine.

I have an '86 305 TPI rebuild .60 oversized, mild cam everything else stock and some real problems somewhere and I was running a 16.804 1/4, 2.470 60', at 81.30 mph. After the run I found a plug caked in oil and probably not firing, so yeah you got a problem somewhere. Hope you get it figured out.

Figure out what was wrong yet?

I ran over the weekend for the first time and did a best of 2.19 60ft running a 15.21 @ 90.18 mph. I was hoping to be in the 14's and probably could have gotten a little closer if I had made a couple more runs times were getting better each pass.
